One such character was never expected by the fans to make the impact that he did, and Oda has now also indicated that he's even stronger than Luffy and Zoro. This guy is none other than the left arm of the Pirate King, Scopper Gaban.

One Piece chapter 1140 gave fans a good look at the skirmish between Luffy and Scopper Gaban. This was not so much a battle but a test from Gaban for Luffy. The former left wing of the Straw Hat Pirates wanted to see for himself what Luffy was made of, whether he truly did beat Kaido, and if he really was Nika, as the rumors said. Luffy was, much to the surprise of the fans, completely overwhelmed by Scopper Gaban in the battle, failing to even touch the old man. What's more, a single Haki-less attack by Scopper Gaban was enough to push both Luffy and Zoro to their most alert state and maximum power, with Luffy going as far as to say that Gaba could've killed him.

While some fans love to claim that Luffy wasn't serious in the battle, the fact is that Gaban wasn't either, as he openly claimed that he was just playing around. For a Yonko to be toyed around with by an old man is absolutely shocking, but the fact is that this isn't just any old man. It is Scopper Gaban, the left arm of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.

In One Piece chapter 1149, Oda took the Gaban hype to the next level by having Nami openly exclaim that Scopper Gaban was strong enough to overwhelm both Luffy and Zoro together. That fact that he managed that while joking around with the two just goes to show that even in his old age, this man is monstrously powerful.

Scopper Gaban is a living legend who was on the same tier as Roger in the past, and this was confirmed directly by Oda himself. Right now, Luffy is far from the level of Prime Gaban, and Zoro is nowhere close to either of them.
