When Shamrock first came to Elbaf and spoke to Loki, he made it very clear that Shanks did in fact come to Marijoa at one point, but that he eventually ended up leaving the place for his own reasons. Shamrock also confirmed that Shanks was actually his younger twin brother, and this reveal didn't really surprise any fan. Since then, fans have been wondering why Shanks visited Marijoa truly, and it appears that Oda has already answered this question before.

Shanks's Connection To Marijoa Is Finally Revealed

  • Shanks Went To Marijoa After Roger's Death
  • He Worked With The Government For A While

When Roger died, fans didn't exactly know what Shanks did. He first wanted to start a new crew with Buggy, but after he was rejected by his sworn brother, Shanks then decided to go his own way. Eventually, Shanks made it to Marijoa, where his family, the Figarlands of the Holy Land, reside. Based on the way Shamrock spoke about Shanks and the fact that Shanks clearly had a seal of the World Government on his left arm when he hung out with Gaban in One Piece chapter 1152, it is clear to see that Shanks did indeed spend some time in Marijoa.

I met Harald at Marijoa, but we couldn't talk freely there. — Shanks

Eventually, however, Shanks left the Holy Land, and the life there wasn't to his liking. He then went on to start his own pirate crew, which is what he always wanted. Shanks ended up creating the Red Hair Pirates, and together with the likes of Ben Beckman, Lucky Roux, Yasopp, and many others, he created a formidable group that is today known to be a Yonko crew.

Why Shanks Was Truly At Marijoa

Shanks Was Likely On A Mission

While some fans might fall into the trap that Oda has laid here and believe that Shanks actually wanted to be a Celestial Dragon, the truth couldn't be further away. Shanks's visit to the Holy Land of Marijoa clearly has a deeper meaning. When Shanks met Roger after the visit from Laugh Tale, the Captain told him something that fans don't know. It is highly likely that it was Roger who gave a very important task to Shanks. More than that, Gaban also calls him the Child of Destiny in One Piece chapter 1152. All these things confirm that Shanks was needed in Marijoa for something important, possibly to do with the Nika fruit, or perhaps even Imu.

Shanks's Role As The Destined Child

Undoubtedly, Shanks isn't Nika, and he isn't the savior of the world. But, he has a very important role to play. Shanks's role is to facilitate the return of the Sun God Nika, and fight alongside him. That's why Shanks was at Marijoa, and likely found out all he could about the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. Eventually, Shanks left, and acquired this fruit in one way or another, taking it to its rightful owner.
