Summary

  • There are many One Piece characters who are way too powerful for their position, abilities, and/or the point in the story at which they appeared.
  • Marshall D. Teach broke a rule by becoming the only character in the entire series who can wield two Devil Fruit powers at the same time.
  • Monkey D. Garp deliberately chose to keep his Vice-Admiral status despite being way stronger than the Admirals above him.

Just like any other conventional battle shōnen anime/manga, One Piece is filled to the brim with extremely powerful characters who can wield all sorts of incredible abilities. Of course, this story has had a natural progression, with Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates encountering increasingly stronger opponents as they delve deeper into the Grand Line and the New World.

These One Piece characters are still great even though they have no counterpart in the manga.

However, there are a surprising number of characters in this series who are way too powerful for their position, their powers, and/or the point in the story at which they were introduced, and they’re all very fascinating to look back at. While One Piece has a lot of overpowered fighters, the following are the most noteworthy examples in the entire series (so far).

8 Charlotte Katakuri

Turned A Seemingly Weak Devil Fruit Into A Real Threat

  • Debut: Chapter 860 (Manga) Episode 825 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Mochi Mochi no Mi
  • Haki: Armament, Observation, and Conqueror’s

Charlotte Katakuri is notorious for wielding the powers of a Devil Fruit that should be very weak on paper, but ended up being incredibly powerful. The Mochi Mochi no Mi allows him to generate, manipulate, and transform into mochi, which he uses to both replicate Luffy’s rubber abilities and to make his body intangible to avoid attacks, similarly to how a Logia Devil Fruit would work.

On top of that, Katakuri can use all types of Haki, including the mighty Conqueror’s Haki and the advanced form of Observation Haki, Future Sight. Of course, as the commander of one of the Four Emperors’ pirate crews, it makes sense that he’s so powerful, but Katakuri is flat-out overqualified for his position, and at times, he feels more worthy of being the captain of the Big Mom Pirates than his mother.

7 Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard)

The Only Character In The Series With Two Devil Fruit Powers

  • Debut: Chapter 223 (Manga) Episode 146 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruits: Yami Yami no Mi and Gura Gura no Mi
  • Haki: Armament and Observation

In the world of One Piece, a person can only eat one Devil Fruit in their life, and they will allegedly die if they ever try to ingest another one. Because of this rule, every single character in this series has wielded the powers of just one Devil Fruit at a time. But there’s someone who has infamously broken this legendary rule: Marshall D. Teach, aka Blackbeard.

He spent many years patiently waiting to acquire the Yami Yami no Mi to not only become incredibly powerful (since it can be used to nullify the powers of other Devil Fruit) but also to strike his former captain, Whitebeard, at the very last minute and somehow steal the Gura Gura no Mi from him. Blackbeard is currently the only character in all of One Piece who can wield two extremely potent Devil Fruits at the same time, and they made him so unstoppable that he was able to become both a Warlord of the Sea and one of the Four Emperors.

6 Sir Crocodile

Luffy Encountered Him Way Too Early In His Journey

  • Debut: Chapter 126 (Manga) Episode 76 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Suna Suna no Mi
  • Haki: Armament and Observation

Sir Crocodile is notorious for being the first real obstacle that Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates encountered on their long journey. After all, he was the first major antagonist in the story, who was a Warlord of the Sea and who wielded the powers of a Logia Devil Fruit, which made him seem incredibly overpowered at the time.

8 Most Beloved One Piece Characters, Ranked

One Piece has a lot of lovable characters, although the list can ultimately be narrowed down to the following contenders.

As a result of his immense strength, Crocodile was able to very easily beat Luffy in combat not once but twice, and he was finally defeated when the main character found an efficient way to nullify his Logia abilities. There’s an argument to be made that Crocodile was way too powerful for the point in the story he was introduced, and since he was defeated by a version of Luffy who didn’t use Haki or Gears, he seems surprisingly weak in comparison to other antagonists in the series.

5 Magellan

The Chief Warden Of Impel Down Is Even Stronger Than Most Pirates

  • Debut: Chapter 528 (Manga) Episode 425 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Doku Doku no Mi
  • Haki: None

Impel Down is the biggest and most important correctional facility in the world of One Piece, as it’s a place where some of the most dangerous criminals are imprisoned. Of course, it’s only reasonable that its chief warden would be strong enough to keep all these prisoners at bay, but at times, Magellan feels way too powerful for this position.

With his prideful personality, relentless working attitude, and deadly poison-based abilities, Magellan has become an extremely proficient fighter who was able to overpower and defeat multiple prominent figures, like Luffy, Ivankov, Bon Clay, and the entirety of the Blackbeard Pirates. To this day, he’s one of the very few main antagonists in the series whom Luffy was not able to defeat, which is enough proof of how overpowered he was at that point in the story.

4 The Seraphim

The Warlords Of The Sea Were Replaced With Something Much More Powerful

  • Debut: Chapter 1059 (Manga) Episode 1087 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Mero Mero no Mi (S-Snake), Supa Supa no Mi (S-Hawk), Nikyu Nikyu no Mi (S-Bear), and Sui Sui no Mi (S-Shark)
  • Haki: Armament and Observation

Most overpowered characters in One Piece are a result of happenstance and accumulated experience, whereas the Seraphims were intentionally designed to be some of the most efficient fighters in this world. Since they’re supposed to be the replacements for the Warlords of the Sea, Doctor Vegapunk gave them a specific combination of properties and abilities that would help them out in battle.

As a result, the Seraphims are perfect clones of the former Warlords, who also possess King’s Lunarian DNA (which gives them incredible durability, speed, and control over fire). They are also cyborgs who can shoot laser beams and can even wield artificial Devil Fruit powers via Green Blood. The Seraphim were created to replace the Warlords of the Sea, but due to their combined attributes, they seem way more powerful and durable than both their original counterparts and any other Pacifista Vegapunk has created.

3 Enel

An All-Powerful “God” Who Was Thwarted By His Only Weakness

  • Debut: Chapter 254 (Manga) Episode 167 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Goro Goro no Mi
  • Haki: Observation

Enel is infamous for deeming himself the “God” of Skypiea since he wielded an extremely powerful Devil Fruit that allowed him to generate and control electricity at will, not to mention that he was one of the very first characters in the series that used Observation Haki (which is called “Mantra” in the Sky Islands). With these impressive abilities, he was able to take control of the entire region, and almost nobody could stop him.

In the dangerous world of One Piece, losing a limb is sometimes seen as getting off easy!

Similarly to Crocodile, Enel was way too powerful for the point in the series at which he first appeared, and some fans believe that he’s even stronger than many characters who were introduced after him. Of course, he was only defeated because he faced Luffy, the only person in the world who was completely immune to his electricity, since his entire body is made of rubber. If Enel had never met the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, he would have most likely succeeded in destroying all of Skypiea and may have even tried to attack the World Government.

2 Monkey D. Garp

A Vice-Admiral Who Is Way Stronger Than Three Admirals Above Him

  • Debut: Chapter 92 (Manga) Episode 68 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: None
  • Haki: Armament, Observation, and Conqueror’s

Luffy’s grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, is the perfect example of a character in this universe who’s way too powerful for the position he’s currently holding. After all, he’s the legendary “Hero of the Marines” who defeated Rocks D. Xebec and is still active as one of the most efficient fighters in the Marines’ forces. But, despite his strength, experience, and prestige, Garp is just one of many Vice-Admirals in this world, instead of being an Admiral or even a Fleet Admiral, like his good friend Sengoku used to be.

This, of course, was a deliberate decision on his part, because he has refused the title of Admiral on more than one occasion because he doesn’t want to work directly for the World Nobles. Nevertheless, it's still very impressive and weird to think that Garp is the sole Vice-Admiral who’s way more powerful than most of the Admirals above him, to the point that he was even able to destroy an entire island with just one attack, his legendary Galaxy Impact.

1 Sugar

This "Little Girl" Is The Wielder Of The Most Overpowered Devil Fruit Ability In The Series

  • Debut: Chapter 682 (Manga) Episode 608 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Hobi Hobi no Mi
  • Haki: None

Whenever fans discuss overpowered characters and/or Devil Fruits in One Piece, there’s one person who always comes to mind: Sugar of the Donquixote Pirates. This 22-year-old woman in the body of a little girl has single-handedly been able to oppress and subdue the population of an entire country for decades, which is impressive for someone who’s just the officer of a pirate crew, and not its captain.

The problem with Sugar’s Devil Fruit, the Hobi Hobi no Mi, is that it just has way too many abilities in one, as it allows her to turn people into toys just by touching them and erase their very existence from other people’s memories, while also granting her seemingly eternal youth. Despite her seemingly inconspicuous position, Sugar was a clever and cruel Devil Fruit user who played a huge role in Doflamingo’s plan to take over Dressrosa, and a lot of people would still be suffering because of her if Usopp had never successfully taken her down.
