Many of the most important reveals in the entire One Piece story have been made during the Elbaf flashback. Most of these details have changed much of what fans have come to know of the world, but the most important of them deals with the formation of the legendary Rocks Pirates and the exploits of their infamous captain, Rocks D. Xebec. However, with him, there is still one prevalent mystery.

In one of the most incredible feats of power in One Piece, Rocks somehow managed to break into the Chamber of Flowers to confront Imu. Here, before he vowed his return, he stated that he was an admirer/follower of Davy Jones. This remains one of the biggest mysteries in the series, but many think that Rocks may have hinted at the greatest pirate of all time who was present centuries ago.

  • Davy Jones may have been Joyboy's ancient rival.

In the One Piece story, Oda has drawn parallels between many characters who have existed in different ages of the world. This is where the central concept of Inherited Will comes in, as it states that the dreams and aspirations of people don't die with them, but instead manifest within those who come much later seeking out the same thing. Just like Inherited Will, there are roles within the world that are repeated.

The most common example of this is with Roger and Luffy, as both set out on the journey to become the Pirate King and, in the process, flipped the world on its head. Both are very similar in terms of personality as well, since they are shown to be incredibly positive and idealistic pirates who tend to spread joy wherever they go, which seems to be a very clear parallel that Oda has made with the legendary Joyboy, who filled the same role as these two characters in the Void Century.

They called him Joyboy. He was the first man to take to the seas... The first to be called a pirate!

Seeing this connection between Roger and Luffy, another connecting factor can be made with their rivals, who are portrayed as the most evil pirates of their age that want the same thing as them but for entirely different reasons. Rocks served this role for Roger while Blackbeard currently does so for Luffy, as these two villains have outright claimed that their greatest desire is to become the King of the World by any means necessary, just to have power, full control over the world, and the freedom to do whatever they like.

So, judging by this, it can be surmised that someone must have been present during Joyboy's time who fit this same rival role for him as well; an evil pirate who was out for world domination. According to this theory, this was Davy Jones, a man who was the complete opposite of Joyboy and was likely his greatest obstacle when it came to ensuring full freedom and peace for the world.

One Piece Pirate From Void Century Davy Jones

The major caveat that detractors of this theory state is the very existence of Imu, who they argue must have been Joyboy's rival as they even recognized his Haki after Emet released it from the knot on Egghead. However, this doesn't necessarily have to be the case, since Imu could either have been present from the First World or, as many like to theorize, could have also been a former member of Joyboy's crew who ended up betraying the legendary pirate. This was, this theory of Davy Jones being Joyboy's rival could still stand.

By explaining that he was a follower of Davy Jones, Rocks got the message to Imu that the line of this legendary and powerful figure still exists to this day, and that the inheritor of Joyboy's will isn't the only one that they should fear. Through these means, an ancient and alternative Will of D. Still exists which seeks to dominate the world, which could provide the perfect setup for Luffy and Blackbeard's ultimate battle in the Final War.

An alternative theory here states that the legendary pirate Davy Jones served a kind of rival role, but in the time even before Joyboy. Through the Harley Texts, it can be surmised that the events of what we know now as the Void Century took place in the Second World, and since Davy Jones is the single most famous pirate in history, both in One Piece and in real life, it could be that he was the rival to Nika in the First World.

However, this is much more unlikely than the previous theory, mostly because Vegapunk explained in his broadcast that Joyboy was the first ever man to be recognized around the world as a pirate. In the Long Ring Long Land arc, Robin reveals that Davy Jones was a legendary pirate, so it's impossible for him to be one before the time of Joyboy. Though this is great fun to speculate on, only time will tell the truth behind this legendary figure.
