The following contains spoilers for One Piece Episode 1114, "For the Beloved Pupil—The Fist of Vice Admiral Garp!", now streaming on Crunchyroll.
For ages, One Piece fans have wondered how powerful Monkey D. Garp is. Thankfully, the wait is over as the latest episode of the One Piece anime finally raised the curtain on this mystery. Monkey D. Garp traveled to Hachinosu to free his protégé from the clutches of the Blackbeard Pirates. Koby had been kidnapped by the Yonko because he wanted to use him as a bargaining chip.
Blackbeard desired to turn Hachinosu into a World Government-affiliated nation, which was an ambitious dream. Normally, the World Government wouldn't even consider talking to such a dangerous pirate, but this is where Koby came in. Given his status as the Hero, the World Government would be forced to do something about it. Unfortunately for Blackbeard, Koby was a member of SWORD, so the Marines and the World Government could just abandon him. This also meant that neither organization would try to rescue him from the clutches of the pirates. Only those who would volunteer could go. Luckily, Garp was ready to help his pupil. He took some young Marines from the G-14 base and headed to Hachinosu.
One Piece Anime Introduces A New Character
Rear Admiral Kujaku made her full debut in Episode 1113 and gave fans a glimpse of her power.
Garp Uses Galaxy Impact For The First Time
Garp Shows What He Is Truly Capable Of
As Garp and the Marines drew closer to Hachinosu, they began to execute their plan. Prince Grus, Hibari, and Kujaku trapped the pirates and paved the way for Garp to go all out. When Garp got the confirmation that everything was set, he launched his vessel into the air. While he was airborne, Garp combined his Conqueror's Haki and Armament Haki to give rise to Galaxy Impact. When he finally landed the attack, the entire town was demolished. Both pirates and Marines were in awe of the power that they witnessed. Surprisingly, Garp said that he could do better, which is rather outrageous.
You fools! Who do you think you kidnapped!? Koby is the future of the Navy! — Monkey D. Garp
It is impossible to watch Episode 1114 and not mention how beautifully Toei animated the whole sequence. From the combination of the Haki to the appearance of stars in the background, everything was exquisite. The scene was amazing in the manga, but the anime took things up a level. After seeing Garp's attack, many questions come to mind, one of them being what would have happened if Sengoku hadn't stopped in Marineford.
How Garp vs. Akainu Could Have Affected The Story
One Of The Biggest What If Moments In One Piece
In the Marineford arc, Akainu killed Ace by punching a hole through his torso. The Admiral's actions angered Garp so much that he was ready to attack him. However, Sengoku stepped in and prevented Garp from doing anything reckless. Back then, fans wondered what would happen if Garp hadn't been stopped. Now, after witnessing the Vice Admiral's power, it looks like Sengoku made the right decision.
Not only would Akainu be pulverized, but it would have caused the Marines to fall into complete disarray. This would have allowed the pirates to gain the upper hand, resulting in the destruction of Marineford. Considering an old Garp has this much power, one can only imagine what the Vice Admiral would have been capable of achieving in his prime.
Garp's Incredible Prime
At His Peak, Garp Was Nearly Unstoppable
In his heyday, Garp was able to compete with Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King. He was the only Marine who cornered Roger and came close to killing him. However, Roger respected him for it and treated the Marine as if he were a friend. Aside from fighting Roger, Garp was involved in the God Valley incident. Garp's involvement in the incident made him known as the Hero of the Marines.
Unlike most strong characters in One Piece, Garp does not have a Devil Fruit. He relies on his Haki and physical strength to get the job done. In his younger days, Garp would practice by crushing mountains with his fist and punching the bow of a Marine ship. This increased his physical abilities and Haki so much that he didn't require a Devil Fruit. While information about most of his past exploits is unknown, fans do know that he was able to beat a 500 million Beri bounty pirate with a single punch.
Can The Current Version Of Garp Beat Kuzan?
Kuzan And Garp Will Fight Each Other In The Next Episodes
Towards the end of One Piece Episode 1114, Kuzan used his power to freeze Hibari. The former Admiral is working for the Blackbeard Pirates, so it is his responsibility to keep on Hachinosu until the Yonko returns. Kuzan is a powerful fighter who managed to hold his ground against Akainu for ten days, despite an elemental disadvantage. This proves that Kuzan's Haki is phenomenal, and it is not something to scoff at.
In addition to his Haki, Kuzan also possesses the Hie Hie no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to freeze anything. A frozen person is completely defenseless and at the mercy of Kuzan. To make things more interesting, Kuzan trained under Garp. So, it will be a face-off between the master and the student. As for the result, if it is a 1v1, Monkey D. Garp will beat Kuzan. However, the former Admiral will win if the Blackbeard Pirates interfere with the fight.
