Summary

  • The 5 Elders in One Piece have deadly Yokai powers given to them by Imu, with Garling potentially having a Fenrir form.
  • Garling's Yokai ability may also be a werewolf form, but Fenrir remains the more likely option based on the many connections they have.
  • Fans theorize Garling's power may relate to Norse mythology, with hints of his design and connections to Yokai transformations.

As the Final War of One Piece inches closer with each passing chapter, the forces of the World Government are slowly coming together to face off against the pirates to determine the fate of the world. Among these forces, the most powerful of all are the mysterious 5 Elders, or Gorosei, who sit at the highest position in the entire organization, at least on the face of it.

Due to this level of authority, these characters are imbued with a special power given to them by the true ruler of the world, Imu. This power is very similar to the Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits of One Piece, allowing the Elders to transform into terrifying creatures called Yokai. The Yokai forms of the original 5 Elders were revealed on Egghead, but with Garling being the latest member, fans have been theorizing what his could be.

St. Figarland Garling's Yokai Power May Be Fenrir

The Most Likely Outcome

First Appearance

One Piece, Chapter 1086, "The Five Elders"

Debut Date

June 12, 2023

In the Egghead Island arc, many incredible reveals were made about the world and many of its important characters. Among the most notable of these was the reveal of the 5 Elders' names and powers, which were shown for the first time in over 1000 chapters at that point. These characters had the powers of Yokai, which are deadly mythical beasts from folklore that everyone initially believed to belong to special Mythical Zoan fruits.

However, at the end of the arc, it was hinted that this may not be the case, since Imu was able to strip these powers from St. Saturn from half a world away and killed him in the process, which also led to the appointment of the former Supreme Commander of the Gods Knights, St. Figarland Garling, to fill in the vacant spot. Now, seeing as how each of the Gorosei had unique Yokai powers seemingly imbued upon them by Imu, it's very likely that the same happened for Garling once he took up the position of an Elder.

Since these are Imu's greatest soldiers, it makes sense that they also have the greatest powers in the World Government, which has caused fans to theorize like crazy about what Garling's Yokai could be. However, the answer to this may have been in front of us the whole time, since Garling may have gotten the ability to transform into the legendary Fenrir from Norse Mythology. There are many reasons why this may be the case, chief of which can be seen with the person whose position Garling took over.

In real life, the planet Saturn has a moon called Fenrir, which may be a hint towards Garling's true power, since Oda is known to take many inspirations from the real world to work them into his story in creative ways. Garling's design also stands out, since his hair and beard give him the appearance of a crescent moon, which could be alluding to the real-life Fenrir moon of Saturn. This is important because, in Norse Mythology, Fenrir is a giant wolf who has two twin sons named Sköll and Hati, of which a very clear comparison can be made, since Garling has twin sons of his own; Shanks and Shamrock

Those who protect scum are lower than the scum they protect!

In the Ancient Norse stories, Sköll and Hati are defined as the wolves who bring about the cycle of day and night, since one of them chases the moon to bring about daytime while the other chases the sun to bring about the night. In a proverbial sense, this can be worked onto Shanks and Shamrock too, since Shanks may embody Sköll as the one who chases the sun, due to him being the one to bring up Luffy as the one to become the next Sun God Nika, choosing the life of a pirate and freedom over that of a Celestial Dragon who champions oppression.

Similarly, Shamrock would be Hati in this analogy, since he chases the moon, which is directly represented by Garling as well as the bleak reality of the Celestial Dragons. All of this would go perfectly with what is known about Garling as well as what his potential Yokai power could be, since Fenrir makes the most sense with the previously listed connections as well as the fact that the other Elder's powers are based upon mythological beings.

An Alternative To What Garling's Yokai Form Could Be

Another Way Of Looking At It

  • The Fenrir ability is the most likely one for Garling.
  • However, the alternative, if there even is one, could be that of a werewolf Yokai.

Alternatively, some believe that although Fenrir is the most likely form that Garling's Yokai ability will take, another wolf-like transformation may work too. These fans state that Garling's Yokai transformation will take the form of a werewolf, which may make sense with the character's agility and power, which has been greatly hinted to have had during the God Valley Incident, though this event remains pretty vague.

However, the reasoning behind why Garling may have a werewolf Yokai largely relies on the same that is used for claiming it to be Fenrir, so it's unlikely to be true in favor of the former theory. Fenrir, overall, just makes far too much sense for Garling, and seeing how the common factor that each Elder shares is their Yokai form, it's probable that this is the one the former Gods Knight calls his own.
