On their journey, they had to face off against some of the mightiest crews and while they failed to win against some, they utterly destroyed the vast majority of them.
9 Buggy Pirates
Arc: Orange Town
The Straw Hat Pirates faced off against the Buggy Pirates in the Orange Town Arc of One Piece. At this time, The Straw Hat Pirates only consisted of Luffy, Nami, and Zoro.
Together, they were able to defeat Buggy, and two of his most powerful henchmen, Mohji and Cabaji. Furthermore, Luffy also crushed Richie, the giant lion who was also a part of the crew.
8 Black Cat Pirates
Arc: Syrup Village
In the Syrup Village arc of One Piece, the Straw Hat Pirates engaged in combat against the Black Cat Pirates. By this time, the Straw Hat Pirates consisted of Luffy, Nami, and Zoro. However, the future member of the crew, Usopp, also ended up fighting the battle with them.
In this arc, Zoro took on the Nyaban Brothers, while Usopp and his group dealt with the threat posed by Django. Meanwhile, Luffy took down the captain of the crew, Kuro himself.
7 Krieg Pirates
Arc: Baratie
During the Baratie arc, where the Straw Hat Pirates recruited Sanji, the Krieg Pirates ended up being the main antagonists. It would have been impossible for the Straw Hat Pirates to defeat the Krieg Armada had it been at its full strength.
However, thanks to Mihawk, the Armada was utterly destroyed, leaving behind only the flagship, which made it back to the East Blue. There, they clashed against the Straw Hat Pirates and were utterly defeated. Notable members of this group included Pearl, Gin, and, of course, Krieg himself. All of them were defeated in combat in one way or another, and the Straw Hat Pirates claimed total victory.
6 Arlong Pirates
Arc: Arlong Park
In the Arlong Park arc of One Piece, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates went up against Arlong and his pirate crew. This was quite a difficult fight for the group, however, one that they relished.
Sanji, who was the newest addition, defeated Kuroobi in combat. Meanwhile, Zoro beat Hachi and Luffy beat Arlong. By the end of this arc, Nami was freed from her prison and she ended up joining the Straw Hat Pirates officially.
5 Baroque Works
Arc: Arabasta
While technically not a pirate group, the Baroque Works was a syndicate that functioned like a pirate crew from behind the scenes. Operated by one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Crocodile, this group was incredibly powerful and consisted of some of the most dangerous individuals.
The Straw Hat Pirates had to push themselves beyond all their limits to be able to defeat them and they certainly did, evolving to the next level in the process. It was Luffy himself who took down Crocodile, while the Number Agents were taken down by the members of the crew.
4 Thriller Bark Pirates
Arc: Thriller Bark
In the Thriller Bark arc, the Straw Hat Pirates went up against a very powerful group of pirates, called the Thriller Bark Pirates. This group was led by Gecko Moria, a Shichibukai. This group also included the likes of Perona, Absalom, and Hogback.
This group also consisted of Oars, the Ancient Continent Puller, who was brought to life using Luffy's shadow. Overall, this group was incredibly difficult for the Straw Hat Pirates to take on in combat and the struggle they faced surely highlighted that very well.
3 New Fishman Pirates
Arc: Fishman Island
After returning from the timeskip, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates immediately got a crew to test their skills against. This group was none other than the New Fishman Pirates. Of course, they were somewhat of a challenge for the crew, however, their main purpose was for Luffy and the group to showcase what they learned during the timeskip and the levels that they had hit.
They took these opportunities with both hands and showed everyone how reliable they had become by defeating the New Fishman Pirates effortlessly.
2 Donquixote Pirates
Arc: Dressrosa
In the Dressrosa arc of One Piece, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates ended up fighting against the Donquixote Pirates, led by the Warlord of the Sea, Doflamingo. At this point, Luffy had teamed up with Trafalgar Law in order to take down Kaido. Doflamingo was a stepping stone in the process.
It must be noted that half of the crew split from Luffy and went to Zou in this arc. With the other half, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates managed to take down the Donquixote Pirates, which just goes to show how skilled Luffy and his group were by this point.
1 Beast Pirates
Arc: Wano Country
By far, the strongest pirate crew that the Straw Hat Pirates toppled in One Piece so far are the Beast Pirates. Luffy and his pirate crew ended up engaging with them in combat during the Wano arc. There, the vast majority of them were taken on by the Straw Hat Pirates and crushed in battle utterly.
The Tobiroppo were defeated by the likes of Jinbe, Robin, Franky, and Nami. Usopp did bits in the arc and supported the crew where help was required. Meanwhile, Chopper did his job as a doctor the best he could and saved countless lives. At the same time, Brook took down a member of the Numbers and some Gifters, all the while keeping Robin safe. The heavy lifting was done by the Wings of the Pirate King, Sanji and Zoro. They took down a member of the All Stars each. Finally, it was Luffy who took down the captain of the crew, Kaido, and liberated the land of Wano in the process.
