Summary
- Joy Boy, Gol D. Roger, and Monkey D. Luffy can hear the Voice of All Things and communicate with beings through it.
- Kozuki Oden was vital in translating Ancient Script and Road Poneglyphs for the Roger Pirates.
- Three-Eye Tribe members like Charlotte Pudding can awaken the ability to hear the Voice of All Things.
The Voice of All Things is an ability held by a small handful of characters in the One Piece series. It allows its users to interpret messages from animals and inanimate objects in a sort of telepathic manner, as these messages are otherwise inaudible. Certain users can even reply to beings who communicate with them, but whether this is classified as a separate ability is unclear. To simplify, this list will focus on characters confirmed to be able to hear the Voice of All Things.
One Piece: 10 Strongest Characters Who Betrayed The World Government
These characters had their own motives for betraying the World Government and are largely no longer affiliated with it.
It is apparently a skill that is usable at various levels, as the series protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, only picked up on elements of it somewhat recently, while other characters have heard it more consistently. It is an incredibly rare ability, and the majority of details surrounding it are still shrouded in mystery. Nonetheless, this rare ability seems to make itself known to significant characters, and will likely have even greater application as the series continues.
6 Joy Boy
The First Pirate
- Joy Boy was affiliated with multiple figures who seem to interact exclusively with users of The Voice of All Things.
Joy Boy, a previous owner of the One Piece and the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, is something of an ancient legend. He firmly opposed the First Twenty—progenitors of what would come to be the World Government—and the Celestial Dragons who ruled them. Luffy is, in many ways, considered a successor to the original Joy Boy, who seems to mirror his freedom and fun-loving mannerisms. Joy Boy's ability to hear the Voice of All Things was used in part to communicate with at least two of his friends, who managed to survive to the present day. Joy Boy also appeared to understand the Ancient Script, as he left an apology for breaking his promise to Fish-Man Island to raise the ship known as Noah.
One of those friends was Zunesha, the massive elephant who hosts the island of Zou atop his back as penance for a presently unspecified crime he committed many years ago. The other was Emet, an automaton whom Joy Boy seemed especially fond of, even using the previously unseen ability to tie his haki into a knot inside the robot for its own future use many centuries later. Many facts are still unclear about Joy Boy, but his ability to hear the Voice of All Things is one of many similarities he shares with Luffy.
5 Gol D. Roger
The King Of The Pirates
- Roger heard the Voice of All Things and showed the ability to "hear" beings communicating through this medium.
Gol D. Roger was the captain of the Roger Pirates. He located Joy Boy's treasure, the One Piece, and subsequently became the Pirate King. Roger's ability to hear the Voice of All Things is thought to have helped him, as he could locate the Road Poneglyphs with it. However, he was not literate in the ancient script, so he was incapable of reading them.
One Piece: The Roger Pirates, Where Are They Now?
A look at the history and present activities of every known crew member of the Roger Pirates in One Piece.
The Road Poneglyphs are essential to discovering Laugh Tale, the island the One Piece was hidden on. Roger was also able to hear the likes of both the Sea Kings and Zunesha. Except for Luffy, Roger is also the only character with the D. Initial confirmed to have been able to hear the voice.
4 Kozuki Oden
The Daimyo Of Kuri
- A member of the Kozuki Family, the rulers of Wano and historical inventors of the Poneglyphs.
Kozuki Oden was a rebellious Daimyo from Wano Country, known for his power and defiance of conventional authority. He was poised to become the next Shogun of Wano, succeeding his father, Sukiyaki. However, the country of Wano was too small a stomping ground for Oden, and he later set sail with the likes of the Whitebeard Pirates, and eventually, the Roger Pirates.
Alongside Roger, Oden understood the Voice of All Things, capable of hearing the same beings Roger did. He was also versed in the Ancient Script the Poneglyphs were written in, with his ancestors having been involved in their creation. He was essential in translating the Poneglyphs for the Roger Pirates. Ultimately, Oden's missed his chance to become Shogun, as Kurozumi Orochi took over the country in his absence, but Oden lived on through his son, who both became the subsequent Shogun and inherited his father's ability to hear the Voice of All Things.
3 Kozuki Momonosuke
The Shogun Of Wano
- Son of Oden, presumed to have the ability due to his interactions with Zunesha and a seemingly unconscious Luffy.
Due to Orochi's takeover and attempted lynching of any Kozuki, Momonosuke was transported to the future, and spent his childhood traveling with four of Oden's vassals. Momonosuke was able to look into Zunesha's eyes and command it, a method essential for it to do anything but walk. In this case, Momonosuke was using the ability to wipe out the fleet of Beasts Pirates attacking Zunesha, allowing the elephant to ultimately defend itself.
Momonosuke was also seemingly able to interpret a reassuring message from Luffy upon his initial defeat, ensuring he would be back to defeat Kaido. This ability is also seemingly related to the Voice of All Things. After the purge of Orochi and Kaido's influence, Momonosuke became the Shogun of Wano.
2 Monkey D. Luffy
The Straw Hat Emperor
- Like Roger and Joy Boy before him, Luffy has also shown himself to be capable of this mysterious ability.
The captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, Monkey D. Luffy, needs little introduction. His ability to hear the Voice of All Things has been seen numerous times, with perhaps the earliest being the ability to understand the Sea Kings that Shirahoshi commanded. Luffy was also able to understand Zunesha and Emet.
He will likely continue to use this ability for more practical purposes in the future, potentially relating to the locations of various Poneglyphs, or communicating with prospective allies others may not understand as readily. In the meantime, it has been built up as one of his more mysterious abilities, with its full extent not being clearly defined as of yet.
1 The Three-Eye Tribe
A Nearly Extinct Race
- An unseen race, said to be innately capable of "awakening the ability," thus far solely represented by Charlotte Pudding (half-human).
The mysterious Three-Eye tribe has gone unseen within the narrative of One Piece thus far. They are one of a few nearly extinct races within the series, alongside the Buccaneers and the Lunarians. As a race, they are innately capable of awakening the Voice of All Things through an as-of-yet unspecified method.
One Piece: 7 Pirates Who Were Born Rich
These One Piece pirates were born into privilege, and typically have non-monetary motives.
Charlotte "Big Mom" Linlin took a male Three-Eye as her 35th husband, who fathered her daughter, Pudding. Charlotte Pudding was frequently bullied over her third eye, especially by her mother, leading her to cover it with her hair in most instances. However, Linlin also views it as potentially useful due to the aforementioned awakening. However, as Pudding is only half Three-Eye, she is unsure if she is capable of doing this.
Given that the Buccaneers are nearly extinct due to some unspecified crime against the World Government, and Mary Geoise was built atop land that was previously Lunarian, it is also possible that persecution by the World Government caused the near-extinction of Three-Eyes. If this were true, it could possibly be connected to their innate ability to hear the Voice of All Things.
