One Piece chapter 1148 was absolutely wonderful and finally gave the fans a brilliant payoff for all the wait that they had to endure over the last two weeks. One Piece chapter 1148 saw Oda mark the beginning of the big fights in Elbaf, as both Nico Robin and Scopper Gaban flew into action.
One Piece: Oda Just Set Up A Major God Valley Flashback In Elbaf
God Valley has been one of the most anticipated flashbacks in the series. Oda has set it up for One Piece's Elbaf arc.
The Holy Knights are already engaged in exciting fights and as these clashes erupted, fans also got to see some new abilities being put on display. This was especially the case for Scopper Gaban's fight against Saint Sommers, where he displayed a powerful Haki that can likely deal soul damage.

- Gaban Was Able To Injure The Holy Knights Permanently
- Luffy Couldn't Do It In Egghead
First and foremost, fans need to understand what Scopper Gaban did in One Piece chapter 1148. Nico Robin fought against Sommers admirably in One Piece chapter 1148, however, she wasn't able to defeat her. Robin even broke his back and despite everything, Sommers kept getting back up. When Robin failed to take Sommers down, she realized immediately that she was going to die. Worse, she knew that the library and school of Elbaf would be burned down.
What? I'm not regenerating! What's going on? — Sommers
It is here that Scopper Gaban quickly made his entry and blitzed Sommers, chopping one of his hands off and then slicing him right across the chest. Much to the surprise of the fans, this damage proved to be permanent, despite the regeneration power of the Holy Knights and their immortality, meaning their gimmick can be countered.
Now, fans also need to understand that what Gaban did was indeed a showing of a new power. Luffy fought against the Five Elders in Egghead and so did Zoro. The vast majority of the fans assume that it simply takes advanced Conqueror's Haki, or Conqueror's Haki Infusion, to damage the Elders and the Holy Knights. However, that's not accurate. Luffy is already a user of this power, and so is Zoro. Both of them dealt damage to Elders and Luffy even claimed that nothing he did worked on them. This meant that not even Conqueror's Haki coating works on immortality. This is basically a confirmation of the fact that what Gaban did was something more advanced.
The New Soul Damaging Haki In One Piece
Gaban Can Use An Advanced Form Of Haki
To put it simply, the ability to deal damage to souls with Haki is a new power. Not everyone in One Piece can do it, and it is highly likely that very few even know of its existence. This power is somewhat similar to Internal Destruction Haki. For those who don't remember, both Conqueror's and Armament Haki can be channeled directly inside the body of the enemy and it can then do damage from the inside, bypassing all defenses.

One Piece: Oda Has Already Revealed How Scopper Gaban Bypassed The Immortality Of The Holy Knights
Gaban is very powerful. He is the only character so far who has been able to bypass the immortality of the Holy Knights in One Piece.
However, this attack is still physical. It is highly likely that Haki can also be channeled directly into the soul of an Individual, meaning soul damage using Haki is an advanced application of this technique, possibly the most advanced yet. Soul Damage using Conqueror's Haki should be the most effective form of attack against the Holy Knights and Elders.
Who Can Do Soul Damage With Haki?
So far, only two individuals have shown the capabilities of doing soul damage with Haki. The first one was Joy Boy, whose Haki was released by Emet, and the second one is Scopper Gaban. No other character has shown these powers yet. But, one can say for sure that Scopper Gaban will teach this power to Luffy soon enough. Soul Damaging Haki is going to be key in One Piece's final saga, especially when the battles against Imu begin.
One Piece chapter 1148 will be out soon, later this week. As usual, One Piece is going to drop on Sunday. In Japan, One Piece drops at 12AM JST on Monday. However, the vast majority of international readers will see the chapter available on May 11. The official release date of One Piece Chapter 1148 is May 11, 2025.
