This list contains spoilers up to the Whole Cake Island arc of One Piece
Unlike a lot of shōnen protagonists, Luffy actually starts off the One Piece story pretty strong considering he possesses a Devil Fruit which turns his body into rubber, allowing him to conjure up all kinds of hard-hitting attacks. With that being said though, the captain of the Straw Hat crew has now become more or less a god in terms of his power level, considering how far he has come throughout the story so far, taking down a myriad of tough opponents throughout his grand adventure to become pirate king. The majority of these battles were far from a walk in the park, but to be honest, there were still a few Marines and pirates who, despite challenging Luffy to a duel, really didn't stand a chance against him in the first place.
One Piece: 8 Strong Characters Who Overpowered Luffy, Ranked
One Piece's Monkey D. Luffy isn't invincible; here are some strong characters who have managed to overpower him.
Whether it's because they are significantly weaker in terms of their physical power and Haki, or because Luffy possesses a natural counter to his enemy, there are a few reasons why someone can be completely outmatched when taking on the One Piece protagonist. These characters below may have talked a big game at first, but it didn't take long before they realized they had bitten off a lot more than they could chew by taking on Luffy.
Cracker
Attacking Luffy With Any Kind Of Food Is Never A Smart Idea
- Episode: 798
Considering Cracker is one of Big Mom's loyal Sweet Commanders, it makes sense why he decided to challenge Luffy as soon as possible once he realized the Straw Hat was trespassing the island. Lucy did admittedly struggle to take down Cracker's biscuit soldiers when their fight first started, but once their exteriors started to soften due to the rain, Cracker had essentially no hope of fighting back, considering his opponent has an appetite which is pretty much endless.
Luthi would begin chowing down on the biscuit soldiers before eventually unleashing his brand-new Tank Man form after stuffing his face full of food. Cracker could probably have done a much better job if his foe wasn't someone who is happy to eat pretty much anything in sight, but considering Luffy is obsessed with consuming as many sweets as humanly possible, Cracker's chances of winning this battle were always pretty low.
Bellamy
Bellamy Just Doesn't Have The Strength Or Durability To Match Up To Luffy
- Episode: 151
When Bellamy first encounters Luffy on the island of Jaya, he's more than happy to start mocking the Straw Hat captain in order to look good in front of his crew. Thanks to his Spring Spring fruit, Bellamy possesses incredible speed and mobility, which enables him to outmaneuver most of his opponents without breaking a sweat, but this go-to technique didn't exactly work when going up against Luffy. With just a single punch to the head, Luffy completely flattened Bellamy in front of his comrades, but that wasn't the only time these two would come face to face.
One Piece: Devil Fruits That Are Easy To Counter
While these Devil Fruit abilities in One Piece are pretty powerful, they can be countered quite easily to prevent them from dealing damage.
After the timeskip, Luffy once again encounters Bellamy, this time around in Dressrosa, where Bellamy is working as an accomplice for his childhood role model, Doflamingo. Despite once again plucking up the courage to take on Luffy, Bellamy is humiliated in the exact same way as he was two years prior, highlighting the staggering power difference that exists between the two captains.
Usopp
Usopp Knew He Couldn't Win Against A Member Of The Monster Trio
- Episode: 236
After being battered and bruised to the point where it was close to splitting apart, the Straw Hats finally decided that it was time to give up the Going Merry Ship once and for all after they reached Water 7. However, one member of the crew who rejected this idea because of his personal connection to the ship was Usopp, resulting in him having a full-blown argument with Luffy which eventually led to a one-on-one duel.
Despite knowing that he would have virtually no chance of taking down a member of the monster trio, Usopp still does all he can to fend off Luffy's attacks using his quirky arsenal of gadgets. In the end, though, while he was able to surprise Luffy with a few attacks and techniques, it wouldn't take long for Luffy to defeat Usopp in one-on-one combat, even though he really didn't want to. If anything, this fight just went to prove that Usopp was correct when he stated that he and the weaker members of the crew would have a hard time reaching the power level of Luffy, Zoro and Sanji.
Wapol
Drum Island's Evil Tyrant Was Utterly Humiliated By Luffy
- Episode: 87
Luffy has faced off against some pretty formidable tyrants throughout his adventure, with Doflamingo and Crocodile being the two biggest examples, but Wapol, the former leader of Drum Island, is the exception. Despite managing to become the leader of the snowy Drum Island through his own devious means, Wapol isn't exactly seen as a strong leader that his people can look up to, but instead, a lazy and childish ruler who simply tries to take out his opponents by eating them, which he is able to do thanks to his bizarre Devil Fruit.
One Piece: Why Buggy May Actually Be Strong
Buggy's sole purpose throughout One Piece has been comedic relief. But is there more to him than that?
Once he takes on Luffy though, Wapol realizes he is completely outmatched, and is eventually utterly humiliated by the Straw Hat captain, who uses his elastic body to throw Wapol around like a chew toy. Just when Wapol goes to take a chomp out of Luffy's head, the protagonist expands his hand to ensure Wapol can't close his mouth, before then flinging him through a roof to send him packing for good, liberating Drum Island in the process.
Blueno
Blueno Struggled To Even React To Luffy's Attacks Once He Entered Gear 2
- Episode: 270
Blueno, the powerful member of CP-9, may have stood a chance of beating Luffy when the captain was in his regular form, but this completely changed once Luffy activated Gear 2. This was the very first time in the series that Luffy had ever entered a new transformation in order to take down a tough opponent, and to say that he embarrasses Blueno in their fight would be a massive understatement. With steam emanating from his body and a confident smirk splashed across his face, Luffy begins moving at lightning speed, to the point where Bleno can't even predict what he's going to attack from.
At the same time, Blueno's Devil Fruit, which allows him to create doors out of thin air, was far too slow for him to use in the middle of battle, considering how fast Luffy was moving as a result of his power up. It's a good thing that Rob Lucci put up a much better fight against Luffy a little later in Enies Lobby, since he pretty much walks all over Blueno after revealing his newest power.
