Summary

  • Some characters in One Piece have modified their Devil Fruit powers, unlocking new abilities and transformations in the process.
  • Tony Tony Chopper developed the Rumble Ball drug to access additional forms, showing ingenuity and creativity with his Devil Fruit powers.
  • Caesar Clown and Black Maria are among the few characters who have altered their Devil Fruit powers to enhance their abilities, making them even more formidable fighters.

In One Piece, if someone eats a Devil Fruit, they’re usually stuck permanently with whatever powers it grants them. Of course, some abilities can end up being surprisingly versatile, not to mention that it’s also possible to awaken a Devil Fruit, but most of the time, characters in this series have no real way of changing their functionality.

However, there have been a few noteworthy exceptions, seeing as some people with incredible scientific and/or medical knowledge were actually able to modify their Devil Fruit powers in order to unlock brand-new abilities, properties, and transformations. This is not a common occurrence in One Piece, but every time it happens, it is nothing short of fascinating, with the following five Devil Fruit users being some of the most impressive and talented ones in the entire series so far.

5 Tony Tony Chopper

Modified The Hito Hito No Mi

  • Type: Zoan
  • Devil Fruit Debut: Chapter 138 (Manga), Episode 83 (Anime)

From the moment he was introduced, Tony Tony Chopper stood out as a unique phenomenon in the One Piece world: he’s actually an animal (a reindeer) who ate a Devil Fruit that allows him to become a human, the infamous Hito Hito no Mi, and not the other way around. This explains pretty much everything about Chopper as a character, like his adorable design, his innocent personality, and his impressive physical strength.

Chopper initially showcased the three main transformations of any Zoan Type Devil Fruit user: Human Form, Human-Beast Form, and Beast Form. However, it was later revealed that he had used his medical expertise to develop a special drug called Rumble Ball, which allowed him to unlock six additional forms that prioritize a specific aspect of his fighting style: Horn Point, Kung-Fu Point, Jumping Point, Arm Point, Guard Point, and Monster Point. This is one of Chopper’s most incredible achievements, and it was a clever way by Eiichiro Oda to add more fun variety to the move set of one of the main characters.

4 Caesar Clown

Modified The Gasu Gasu No Mi

  • Type: Logia
  • Devil Fruit Debut: Chapter 658 (Manga), Episode 581 (Anime)

Caesar Clown is a brilliant (albeit evil) scientist who specializes in creating deadly biological weapons. So it should be no surprise that not only did he eat the Gasu Gasu no Mi — a Logia Type Devil Fruit that allows him to turn into and manipulate gas — but he also modified his powers to make them even more dangerous.

According to Caesar himself, he experimented with the gases of his Devil Fruit in order to make them so lethal that just breathing them can incapacitate or even kill an opponent. Unfortunately, it’s unknown how exactly this Devil Fruit worked before Caesar experimented on it (since he’s its only confirmed user in the series), but it can be safely assumed that he either added poisonous properties to his gas or he enhanced them even further.

3 Queen

Modified The Ryu Ryu No Mi, Model: Brachiosaurus

  • Type: Zoan
  • Devil Fruit Debut: Chapter 945 (Manga), Episode 944 (Anime)

Queen is the only cyborg in the series that has eaten a Zoan Type Devil Fruit, and as a result, the cybernetic enhancements in his body have also affected his transformations. He ate the Ryu Ryu No Mi, Model: Brachiosaurus, which (as its name implies) allows him to turn into a giant Brachiosaurus at will. This was already quite an incredible ability in and of itself, but Queen made it even more powerful with his modifications.

In his Brachiosaurus form, Queen can extend his long neck even further, grab things with the additional robot hands in his tail and hair, shoot laser beams and rockets, and even detach his tail and neck from the rest of his body in order to turn into a snake-like creature (although it’s possible this last technique was just how Brachiosaurus used to hunt in the One Piece world). By combining his Ancient Zoan Devil Fruit with his incredible cybernetic augmentations, Queen basically became a living killing machine, and he proved to be quite an efficient fighter during the Raid on Onigashima.

2 Black Maria

Modified The Kumo Kumo No Mi, Model: Rosamygale Grauvogeli

  • Type: Zoan
  • Devil Fruit Debut: Chapter 997 (Manga), Episode 1011 (Anime)

When Black Maria revealed the powers of her Zoan Type Devil Fruit, the Kumo Kumo no Mi, Model: Rosamygale Grauvogeli, her hybrid transformation immediately stood out because of how different and unusual it was. Instead of combining the physical properties of both a human and a spider, they were split into two different parts of her body instead. As a result, she looked like a regular giant woman with spider legs, which was obviously supposed to be a reference to the mythical spider-like yokai, the Jorogumo.

Fans wondered what made Black Maria’s Devil Fruit so different for some time, until Eiichiro Oda himself explained it in one of the manga’s SBS Columns: she ingested a special drug that allows her to alter the appearance of her hybrid form, similar to Chopper’s Rumble Balls, and he even drew a small illustration of how Black Maria’s regular hybrid form would look like. It is unknown if this special drug was something that she made herself or if she got it from another member of the Beasts Pirates (like Queen), but she made the active decision to consume it to modify her Devil Fruit powers. Curiously enough, since Jack’s hybrid form also looks quite unusual, many fans theorize that he may have ingested that same drug as well.

1 Doctor Vegapunk

Modified The Nomi Nomi No Mi

  • Type: Paramecia
  • Devil Fruit Debut: Chapter 1066 (Manga), Episode 1096 (Anime)

Doctor Vegapunk is the smartest man in One Piece, and he was directly responsible for some of the most important scientific breakthroughs in this world (like discovering how to make inanimate objects “eat” Devil Fruits), so it was not a surprise to learn that he had not only eaten a rare Devil Fruit but that he had also modified it in order to make it even more useful and effective.

Many years in the past, Vegapunk ate the Nomi Nomi no Mi, which greatly expanded his brain and allowed him to gain infinite knowledge. However, at one point, his head had gotten so enormous that he decided to cut it off, connect it to his body with an antenna, and contain it in a special area of his laboratory that would go on to be known as Punk Records. On top of that, he also split himself into six different satellites that are also connected to his brain and actively contribute to making it learn more and more information. Everything that Vegapunk did with his Nomi Nomi no Mi is absolutely amazing, and it further cemented him as the most brilliant mind in this fictional world.
