Disliking someone from One Piece isn’t unusual, as there are characters, regardless of whether they are protagonists or antagonists, who naturally invite hate through their bad personality, questionable actions and choices, and the overall chaos they bring to the entire story. Even side characters could face unexpected backlash, despite their limited role in the grand scheme of things.

However, there are some characters who get so much undeserved hate in One Piece that it’s starting to spiral out of control. Surprisingly, the reaction from the fans can be so intense that it reduces the character’s actual contribution to the story. At this point, constructive criticism stops being reasonable and becomes more toxic than ever.

Nami

one piece all luffy love interests ranked weakest to strongest
  • Hated for: abusive reactions and impulses, being weak, and her exaggerated love for money.

Nami is an indispensable member of the Straw Hat Pirates, yet that hasn't stopped the fans from coming after her. Without Nami, Luffy and the crew would have been lost at sea countless times, left defenseless against the unpredictable and deadly climates of the Grand Line. She may be the most popular female character of the series, but not everyone adores her.

Most of the criticism she faces stems from her habit of hitting multiple Straw Hat members so frequently that it often blurs the line between harmless slapstick and actual abuse. Also, her weakness usually becomes a major issue for fans who are obsessed with power scaling in the series.

Not to mention, some people doubt her authenticity every time she chooses her friends over money. Though Nami loves money, she never fails to put the safety of her friends above wealth, especially after the Arlong Park arc.

Sanji

  • Hated for: Sanji’s over-the-top perverted personality

Just like Nami, Sanji is an essential member of the Straw Hat Pirates. He has a cool design, and he possesses qualities that make him a good crew member. He even has some of the coolest moments in the series. He’s also a well-developed character, with the Whole Cake Island arc offering another side to Sanji that fans can easily empathize with.

Unfortunately, the over-the-top gimmick of Sanji’s perverted personality always gets on the nerves of fans. While he can be polite to women, there are times when he takes it too far, making him appear creepy and cringe-worthy. This gimmick can easily make many fans uncomfortable.

Despite Sanji’s flirtatious nature, his strengths, like his culinary skills, unmatched combat skills, and unwavering loyalty to his crew, more than compensate for his exaggerated antics.

Chopper

One Piece Chopper's Best Moments In The Show
  • Hated for: unnecessary screen time, little contribution to the Straw Hat Pirates, and being the mascot of the group.

Believe it or not, Chopper is yet another Straw Hat member who receives unnecessary hate from the fans. Yes, he’s cute and irresistible, but many fans can’t tolerate Chopper’s perceived uselessness despite being the doctor of the crew.

Many fans have also noted Chopper’s tendency to whine about nearly everything, which some find irritating. On top of that, he sometimes receives more screen time than expected, which can fuel further criticism. Plus, Oda deliberately established him as the mascot of the crew.

However, fans shouldn’t forget about Chopper’s valuable contributions to the crew. His medical knowledge might be limited, but he has saved the crew multiple times with his skills. His character development, from a timid and insecure reindeer to a much more confident and reliable ally, highlights the heart he brings to the story.

Shanks

one piece best episodes true fans should watch
  • Hated for: being too OP without feats, bland portrayal, and overall mystery.

Shanks is said to be Eiichiro Oda’s “golden boy,” mostly because of the author’s seemingly personal fondness for him. Oda clearly established Shanks as an overpowered pirate, yet fans find him dull and boring due to the lack of astonishing feats that can leave them in awe of his supposed combat prowess.

Other than that, Shanks appears relatively infrequently, making fans feel he’s overhyped compared to how little he actually shows up. And when he does show up, his presence alone is enough to overshadow other characters without the need to take action. He also seems to have the worst timing for appearances, particularly during the Marineford story arc.

On the bright side, Shanks is still an easy character to love. He has all the qualities that can easily ignite support from fans. He is powerful, and even when he appears briefly, he never fails to make an impact. He also proves that true strength doesn’t always mean physical dominance. Besides, it’s obvious that he has a crucial role in the final saga of the series, so fans just need to sit back, relax, and wait for his best moments.

Koby

koby honesty impact
  • Hated for: sudden power growth, undeserved power and influence, and being compared to Luffy.

Koby is a recurring character in One Piece, criticized for his sudden zero-to-hero transformation after the time skip. Many fans believe that he doesn’t deserve the power and influence he quickly gained, arguing that it was supposed to be Smoker who should rise in strength. In short, his growth seems exaggerated and too unrealistic, without having Devil Fruit abilities or learning any flashy techniques.

Many fans also dislike how Koby is often compared to Luffy, saying that they are each other’s counterparts. Critics argue that this comparison feels forced, and fans should avoid hyping Koby as if he shares the same charisma and narrative weight as Luffy.

However, it’s not unusual for characters to get sudden power boosts in One Piece, and Koby is no exception. He is also a morally admirable character within the Marines, someone who embodies both justice and compassion.

Usopp

Usopp Has Been Disappointing In Elbaf So Far one piece
Usopp from One Piece
  • Hated for: Reverse character development, cowardly nature, and wasted potential.

Usopp is no stranger to criticisms, often being called weak or cowardly, despite his pretty solid dream of becoming a brave warrior of the sea. He had a lot of opportunities to show off his sniping abilities, but most of the time, he chose to run away, prioritizing his survival over confrontation. As a result, much of his potential goes unused, even though his abilities could greatly aid the Straw Hats in critical moments.

Moreover, Usopp usually gets sidelined in the series. It’s rare for him to get the spotlight from other members of Luffy’s crew, making his character criminally underdeveloped. Worse, fans have grown less amused by him and are increasingly frustrated with how he contradicts his earlier personality. Unfortunately, it feels as though Usopp’s character has taken a step backward with his reverse development.

Despite this, Usopp remains a fascinating character in the series. It’s fun to root for him, especially when he’s up against enemies far stronger than him. He’s unpredictable and relatable, making his victories all the more satisfying.

Foxy the Silver Fox

Foxy in One Piece
  • Hated for: Character design, extended role, and quirky abilities.

It’s easy to see why Foxy receives so much hate from the fans. He has a crude personality, and it doesn’t help that he looks like a gag character instead of an actual villain. He also has a quirky devil fruit ability that feels more comedic than threatening, which makes it difficult for fans to take him seriously.

On top of that, the Long Ring Long Land story arc felt so long that seeing Foxy antagonize the Straw Hat Pirates feels repetitive rather than exciting. Fans can’t help but get bored while waiting for the actual important battles.

In Foxy’s defense, his entire character was designed to be comedic from the very beginning. He was never designed to act like Sir Crocodile or Doflamingo but rather to provide lighthearted humor and playful challenges to Luffy and his crew. For some, his character is still a fresh take on the villains, offering unpredictability instead of menace. Plus, you get to see Luffy in an afro while fighting against him!

Big Mom

  • Hated for: Crude personality, family drama, and character design.

Big Mom is one of the best villains that fans have ever seen in One Piece, yet many are still hating on her crazy, chaotic personality, over-the-top family drama, and inconsistent power moments. Some fans also find her backstory underwhelming compared to other Yonko, as Big Mom has always been greedy, selfish, and annoying. She never truly grew up, and no one can ever say no to her.

However, all these qualities can also be considered her strong points as a villain in One Piece. After all, she was born as a natural disaster, someone who commands fear and respect wherever she goes. True enough, she looks terrifying, and the threat she exudes is real, from her massive size and unmatched strength. Not to mention, her backstory is traumatic, with her parents abandoning her at a young age, forcing her to survive in the most unexpected ways possible.

Uta

  • Hated for: Sudden relevance in One Piece, OP abilities, and personal goals.

One of the biggest reasons why Uta is hated by One Piece fans is her sudden appearance in the lore. She almost felt like an insert character, just a random character added to the story with little to no buildup. Her introduction is incredibly late for someone who was Luffy’s childhood friend and Shanks’ adoptive daughter.

Worse, Uta holds incredible powers that require the combined strength of two of the most powerful pirate crews in One Piece. For many fans, this feels like a disrespect to the established power balance in the series.

On the contrary, adding Uta to One Piece is one way to give more character depth to Shanks, who, as fans know, remains an enigmatic character. She also brings a unique aesthetic to the series with her powers.
