The Marines in One Piece project an image of total authority, hardened discipline, and fanatical loyalty to the Five Elders above all. Members such as Admirals Kizaru and Akainu embody these ideals of loyalty and commitment, but others do not. Some members of the World Government's military arm got kicked out, sometimes because they wished to exit this brutal organization. Only a minority of known Marines have left the ranks, which makes them stand out that much more.
Curiously, not everyone who got kicked out of the Marines ended up switching sides to become heroes. A few did, with some Marines losing faith in the World Government's navy, while others merely switched one brand of villainy for another. Not many ex-Marines and ex-officers can be found in One Piece, yet some of them rank among the most impactful and memorable characters in the entire series.
8 One Piece Characters That Should Join The Straw Hat Grand Fleet
The Straw Hat Grand Fleet needs new, powerful members. These One Piece characters could eventually join the group.
Monkey D. Dragon Parted Ways With the Marines After God Valley
Dragon's Rescue of Shamrock and Shanks Changed His Worldview
Luffy's own father, Monkey D. Dragon, is one of the most famous and important cases of someone getting booted out of the Marines. Interestingly, his case is also one of the gentlest in a way, since his own father, Garp, helped secure Dragon's peaceful exit from the Marines. Dragon "repaid" his father by becoming the boss of the Revolutionary Army, an entity devoted to fighting the Marines whom Dragon once served.
Dragon once believed in the cause, but as One Piece's recent manga chapters showed, all that changed once Dragon witnessed the travesty that was the God Valley Incident. Dragon couldn't stomach the idea of hunting innocent people for sport, and he listened when a certain mother asked him to save her young son, Teech. Dragon was also the one who helped rescue the twin baby brothers Shamrock and Shanks.
Jaguar D. Saul Was a Giant Marine Who Saved Robin's Life
The Will of D. And the Marines Are Incompatible
A few bearers of the fabled Will of D. Ended up donning the uniform of the Marines, paradoxically enough. Anyone with the Will of D. Is a natural enemy of the "gods" who oversee the World Government and the Navy, so of course, characters like Saul and Dragon got kicked out. In Jaguar D. Saul's case, he left the Navy not to save people at God Valley, but at Ohara during a devastating Buster Call.
6 One Piece Characters Who Will Unlock Haki In Elbaf
Elbaf will be a major arc for these characters. They will unlock Haki soon in One Piece.
The young Nico Robin owed her life to the giant Saul when he shielded her from harm, and it was a miracle Saul survived his own selfless actions. The two of them parted ways for many years after that, but now Saul is home on Elbaph, where he and Robin enjoyed a reunion, happy tears and all. Also, Saul is one of very few giants known to have the Will of D., and notably, Imu stated how all of Elbaph is D. It's no wonder Saul turned on the Navy and got kicked out to save innocent lives like Robin's.
Admiral Aokiji Quit After He Battled Akainu at Punk Hazard
Aokiji Has Sunk to the Level of the Blackbeard Pirates
It once seemed that the mighty Admirals would be the most committed members of the Navy, but now the original three Admirals are 2 for 3. Kizaru and Akainu still obey Imu at all costs, but former Admiral Aokiji/Kuzan is a different story. He had a falling out with Akainu after the battle at Marineford, and narrowly lost to him at Punk Hazard. There's little doubt Aokiji was furious and under a great deal of stress as his career ended while narrowly escaping with his life.
In one of One Piece's greatest ironies, Aokiji fell in with the Blackbeard Pirates, which is as far removed from the Marines as he can get. The Blackbeard Pirates are rowdy, uncontrollable ruffians who fiercely oppose the World Government, just the way Captain Blackbeard does and Rocks. D. Xebec once did. There isn't even any sign Aokiji is doing this to secretly betray the Blackbeard Pirates from within, so he's clearly serious about this. Now, there's simply no way the Marines will take Aokiji back, regardless of his icy Logia powers.
Captain Morgan Was Hated By His Own Men
Morgan Remains at Large to This Day
One of the first Marines to ever appear was Captain Morgan in the Romance Dawn Saga. He was an early and minor example of the Navy's endless cruelty and abuses, though it cost him eventually. Morgan was the tyrant of Shells Town, and that made him and the freedom-loving Luffy bitter enemies. Once Morgan fell, his men cheered, a clear sign of how unpopular he was.
Unlike some ex-Marines, who paid the price for their acts, Morgan got away with his misdeeds. It's true he was arrested and was meant to be put on trial, but he escaped while Garp was napping, and he's been on the loose ever since. One Piece often finds use for loose ends, but given Morgan's minimal power and influence, he's likely to remain off-screen to the very end.
Sentomaru Shifted His Allegiance to the Straw Hats
Sentomaru Became One of Luffy's Best Allies at Egghead Island
Sentomaru was introduced as the master of the Pacifistas, which made him an enemy of the Straw Hats in a sense. He did have a minor role to play in the Marineford battle, but One Piece fans now care much more about Sentomaru as a hero. Sentomaru showed up for the Egghead Island Arc as a new ally of the Straw Hats, turning on the Marines to stand up for what is right.
One Piece: 6 Characters With The Highest Win Rate, Ranked
You can bet that these One Piece characters are always going to come out on top.
Sentomaru played tug-of-war with the Marines to control the army of Pacifistas found on Egghead, though he could only do so much in that role. Sentomaru did escape the chaotic battle of Egghead despite the presence of powerhouses like the Five Elders, but he was lucky to get out of there alive. As someone who's cut ties with the increasingly unforgiving Marines, Sentomaru must keep watching his back.
Caesar Clown Went Rogue on Punk Hazard With His Experiments
Caesar Was Too Cruel For Even the World Government
It says something truly grim about Caesar Clown's personality that he ended up getting kicked out of the Marines due to his unethical ways. As One Piece fans have seen, the Navy and Five Elders will tolerate or even encourage all kinds of abuse, such as Saturn's rough deal with Bartholomew Kuma, but Caesar found a way to be too extreme for even that.
Caesar Clown went rogue as someone who refused to shut down his outrageously unethical and cruel experiments on Punk Hazard. Even after severing ties with the Marines, though, Caesar didn't lack allies or test subjects, which ensured he remained a serious threat to the Straw Hats, Trafalgar Law, and Smoker when they all arrived at Caesar's front doors.
Dr. Vegapunk Joined Luffy's Side to Resist the Five Elders' Evil Ways
Dr. Vegapunk Gave His Life to Defy the Navy and World Government
Dr. Vegapunk, just like Sentomaru and Will of D. Bearers, was kicked out of the Navy hierarchy for positive and heroic reasons. He may be a rogue scientist like Caesar Clown, but otherwise, the two of them could not be more different. Dr. Vegapunk actually has a conscience, which was why he protested more and more as Jaygarcia Saturn carried out that villainous deal with Kuma and Bonney. Dr. Vegapunk was totally on Kuma's side, and now he is on Luffy's side as well.
Dr. Vegapunk gladly betrayed the Navy and Marines to protect the world from Imu's wrath. He risked and ultimately lost his life in that endeavor, spreading his recorded message to the entire world about the impending floods. Dr. Vegapunk may be gone now, but he didn't regret what he did, and he has his Satellites to carry on his work from here on out.
