However, even though Roger had his fair share of good friends & allies, it would have been impossible to reach such a legendary status without making a lot of enemies as well. Throughout his career as a pirate, a lot of prominent figures grew to truly despise Gol D. Roger, and the following six characters definitely hate him the most.

6 Shiki

One Of The Many Evil Pirates Who Were Brought Down By The Pirate King

Gol D. Roger and Shiki discuss their ideals during the Battle of Edd War.

Back when they were both active, “Golden Lion” Shiki and Gol D. Roger had an interesting dichotomy & rivalry, with the former wanting to take control of the seas, while the latter wanted everyone to be free instead. They clashed many times and grew to somewhat respect each other, but everything changed when they met once again during the Battle of Edd War.

After rejecting his proposal to become allies, Gol D. Roger and his crew completely obliterated the Golden Lion Pirates and their huge armada. After this crushing defeat, Shiki was imprisoned in Impel Down and held a great grudge against the Pirate King for years. Despite his hatred, he tried (and failed) to kill Roger himself because he felt that it was dishonourable for him to die at the hands of weak marines.

5 Portgas D. Ace

Resented His Father, Even Though He Never Met Him

Portgas D. Ace remembers his father, who he resents.

Tragically, one character who held a grudge against Roger was his own son, Portgas D. Ace. Even though he was born after his execution, Ace's blood relationship with Roger made his life all the more difficult, mainly due to most people who knew the Pirate King deeming him as a “devil” only due to his heritage.

Wielding fire is a common fictional trope, and is also seen in One Piece's many Devil Fruits. Here are the strongest fire-based Devil Fruits so far.

Ace grew a lot of resentment against Roger for forcing him to exist in a world that wanted him dead. Because of this, he ended up rejecting his status as the son of the Pirate King and eventually saw Whitebeard as his true father, after joining his pirate crew. Sadly, Ace’s relationship with Roger was one of the reasons that the World Government decided to execute him after he was captured.

4 Kaido

Was Envious Of His Glorious Death

Kaido cries while drunk because he can't have a glorious death.

Just like Shiki, Kaido was part of the Rocks Pirates, and he began seeing Gol D. Roger as his enemy after he and Garp defeated their captain, Rocks D. Xebec. Shortly thereafter, Roger’s ascension to Pirate King completely changed Kaido’s worldview, who began thinking that Haki was more important than Devil Fruit's powers when it came to fighting.

But the thing about Roger that made Kaido hate him more than anything else was his death. He had a glorious death, completely changing the world as he was being executed. Kaido always wanted to die in a similar manner, but he never managed to do so. His grudge and jealousy also led him to try to find the One Piece and become the new Pirate King alongside Big Mom, but his dreams were crushed after he was defeated by Monkey D. Luffy.

3 Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom)

Hated Roger Until Her Final Moments

Big Mom remembers Roger as she fades away.

It seems that Charlotte Linlin, better known as Big Mom, never grew to respect Gol D. Roger as much as her former crewmates from the Rocks Pirates did. This can be chalked up to a number of different reasons, like her childish and more competitive personality, or the fact that Roger managed to steal the contents of her Road Poneglyh many years in the past.

She hated Roger so much that she even thought about him as she was falling to her inevitable doom, something that is quite fascinating and demonstrates how much she truly loathed him. Big Mom claimed that she resented Roger because he was entirely responsible for creating the new golden age of piracy, which brought in a new wave of ambitious and powerful pirates who managed to defeat her. It could be said that Roger’s dying speech indirectly led to her downfall.

2 Rocks D. Xebec

The Most Powerful Pirate Was Defeated By Roger And Garp

The former captain of the Rocks Pirates, Rocks D. Xebec, is still a character that is very much shrouded in shadows and mystery, so not much is currently known about his personality or his relationships with other characters. However, it can be assumed that he truly despised Gol D. Roger because both he and Monkey D. Garp were directly responsible for his defeat, and maybe even his death.

The Rocks Pirates were infamous for being one of the most infamous, feared and dangerous crews in the entire world, with Xebec himself being one of the many reasons behind their reputation. Considering how ruthless he was, he definitely despised Roger for taking him down and destroying his crew, especially because the future Pirate King had to ally himself with a marine in order to do so.

1 The Five Elders & Imu

The Pirate King Changed Their Entire World, And It Greatly Angered Them

The Five Elders bow to Imu, who is sitting on the empty throne.

If there’s something that is a threat to oppressive governments, it’s legendary figures that can change all society in the blink of an eye. This is exactly what Gol D. Roger did to the World Government of One Piece, which led their main authorities, the Five Elders and Imu, to truly despise him more than anybody else. If finding the One Piece treasure - which they were trying to hide - wasn’t already enough, their decision to publicly execute Roger completely backfired.

They were trying to send a message and prevent people from becoming pirates, but the Pirate King’s reputation and final words managed to do the opposite. Nowadays, there are multiple pirate crews trying to find the One Piece and discover the truth about the world that both the Five Elders and Imu are trying to keep hidden. All of that wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for Gol D. Roger, and they're all going to truly resent him until the very end of their reign.
