He was the previous user of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and he utilized its powers immensely well. How Joy Boy ate the Devil Fruit remains unknown, but it is already clear in the story that he did, in fact, utilize this fruit's abilities, and that he was the previous Nika.
With his abilities, he took on the Twenty Kings of the world, and this battle raged for many years. Eventually, Joy Boy lost the battle and died, however, his will has now been inherited by none other than Luffy. Fans will most definitely get a proper look at Joy Boy with Gear 5 once his own flashback begins, which should be at some point in the final saga.
