How Did The Edd War Start

Gol D. Roger

Gol D. Roger was the strongest and most famous pirate of his era. He was on a mission to sail to all the islands, and in doing so, he learned about the existence of the Ancient Weapons. Naturally, the news of a famed pirate discovering a potent weapon spread like wildfire, and there were numerous people who wanted the item for themselves. But not many people would have dared to confront Roger and his crew to ask about the weapon.

I refuse your offer! - Gol D. Roger

Shiki was one of the select few who had the courage to face Roger and took the opportunity with both hands. Shiki met Roger in the New World and made him an offer. Shiki told Roger that the latter would become his right-hand man in exchange for information about the Ancient Weapon. This proposal did not sit well with Roger, who rejected it without forethought. Roger believed that being a pirate meant having the free will to do anything, so he refused to work under someone as it went against his ideology. Shiki did not take well to the rejection, and he decided to attack Roger and his crew.

The Power Of The Two Sides

The Roger Pirates were arguably the most fearsome crew in the world. Led by their charismatic captain, they were unwavering in the face of danger. Roger was the master of all three types of Haki, and it has been stated multiple times that Whitebeard was his only rival. Roger used Ace, a Saijo O-Wazamono grade sword, as his primary weapon. A single slash from his blade was strong enough to send Kozuki Oden flying.

This was the same Oden who would go on to hammer Kaido in Wano. Besides Roger, Rayleigh was another strong fighter. Rayleigh had access to all variants of Haki. In his old age, Rayleigh was able to fight an Admiral without sustaining any injuries. Therefore, it is safe to assume that in his prime, he would have been a monster. Scopper Gaban is another famous Roger Pirate, but his strength remains a mystery.

Shiki was not alone, in fact, he had an armada on his side. Previously, Shiki was a member of the Rocks Pirates, but after their disbandment, he started his own crew. Shiki's group came to be known as the Golden Lion Pirates. As the captain, Shiki was the strongest fighter within the crew. He likely possessed two types of Haki, and he could use them without any problems. Shiki also possessed the Fuwa Fuwa no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allowed him to levitate himself and inanimate objects. Shiki was adept at using the power, evidenced by his destruction of a massive portion of Marineford. In his heyday, Shiki was able to take on Garp and Sengoku at the same time. The other members of Shik's crew and his fleet were nowhere near impressive.

Shiki thought that he had cornered the Roger Pirates with his massive fleet. Even on paper, one would assume that Roger's crew was at a significant disadvantage. However, this turned out to be a big mistake. Even though Roger had just one ship, he managed to put up a respectable performance.

As the crew hung on, the weather changed drastically, and a hurricane appeared suddenly, destroying half of Shiki's fleet. This gave Roger the opening that he needed to swing the pendulum in his favor. To make matters worse, a piece of the steering wheel was stuck inside his head. This forced Shiki and his comrades to retreat.

The Aftermath

While it was not a routine victory for Roger and his crew, they still managed to make the headlines. Roger's courage earned him the respect of the Golden Lion. If the war had ended in Shiki's favor, it is very likely that the King of the Pirates would have been someone else.

This would have been a massive turning point in the world, as the other group might have revealed the truth about the Void Century and possibly taken the One Piece from Laugh Tale. It is also possible that surviving the Edd War gave Roger's morale a big boost.
