As is quite clear, Oda doesn't like to kill off too many characters in the story, but there are times when he absolutely must do so. Marineford is a prime example of this, where Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece went on to kill off Portgas D. Ace, Luffy's brother. To this day, fans consider Ace's death to be the most tragic in One Piece, but now, Oda has revealed another crushing death that reduced many fans to tears. Years after the fall of Fire Fist, Oda shows that things can get even worse in the One Piece world.

Rocks D. Xebec's Death In One Piece Chapter 1165 Was Tragic

If there's one death that can be said to be the most tragic death since the fall of Ace, it is that of Rocks D. Xebec. Oda often kills of some of the most amazing side characters in the story, and Ace was certainly one of them. There are many others that Oda has killed off as well, but one thing that Oda refuses to do is disrespect those who die.

Usually, in the One Piece world, characters die smiling, especially when it comes to the good cast of characters. Even Ace, whose loss was immense, died with a big smile on his face. Whitebeard died standing proud, Roger died with a smile, and so did Oden. Just about every big character that died in One Piece had their moment of glory at the time of their death, aside from Rocks D. Xebec.

In Rocks, Oda crested a truly tragic death that is horrifying at its core. Rocks went to God Valley to save his family, and while he succeeded in rescuing his wife and kid, he fell to Imu in the process. Whereas Rocks had challenged the might of Imu at one point, he was turned into a mindless slave at the end.

Rocks being turned into a mindless slave with Domi Reversi was truly heartbreaking to see. Imu tried to use Rocks to kill his own family, and while they ended up succeeding, Rocks could simply follow the orders of the World Government ruler, wiping out life on God Valley. As Rocks fought Roger and Garp, tears flowed down his face, and his misery was deep.

Rocks, I don't know what I can say to console you now, but I can feel your sorrow! — Garp to Rocks D. Xebec, One Piece 1165

He simply wanted to die at that point, and begged Roger and Garp to do so. The strongest pirate of the era was then put out of his misery by Roger and Garp, and both of them understood the pain that he was going through. While most legends in the One Piece world die smiling, Rocks died crying tears of grief and sadness.

While Rocks D. Xebec died on God Valley, his very essence reverberated across the era, and it lives to this day through the likes of Loki and Blackbeard. Rocks might've died in a miserable manner, but his some will most likely avenge him, and Loki still carries his ideas as well.
