Summary

  • Despite age, old Marines like Tsuru and Garp hold authority and prowess, remaining formidable adversaries.
  • Veterans like Brannew and Bluegrass, though older, command respect and actively contribute to Marine initiatives.
  • Admirals Fujitora, Kizaru, and Akainu continue to exert influence, showcasing power and experience in the Marines.

The Marines serve as one of the three great powers in the One Piece series due to their extensive influence and experienced veterans. While relatively young and ambitious Marines like Koby and Helmeppo are coming up to shape the future, many of their predecessors still serve and have done so for decades.

Many of today’s One Piece powerhouse Marines are from Gol D. Roger’s generation, and despite being powerful, they’re no doubt getting old and weaker as time passes. From powerful Marines like Garp to aged veterans like Tsuru, One Piece has no shortage of relatively old Marines, but despite their age, they aren’t to be underestimated.

Warning! A couple of entries contain Egghead spoilers, proceed with caution.

10 T Bone

A Veteran Whose Dedication To Justice Never Faded

  • Status: Deceased
  • Rank: Vice Admiral
  • Age: 53 (after time skip, at death)

Debuting during the pre-time skip era, Vice Admiral T Bone battled Zoro when the pirate and his comrades were en route to Enies Lobby to save Robin from the hands of CP9. Despite acknowledging Zoro to be a fearsome foe, T Bone was ready to face him nonetheless to protect his subordinates and due to his moral code as a Marine.

T Bone’s moral code was present during many of his years in the service, as he even became overly stressed about his subordinates' relatively unimportant problems. Unfortunately, T-Bone died at the hands of a civilian, the very people he swore to protect.

9 Issho (Fujitora)

The Blind Admiral Who Sees The Flaws Of The World

  • Status: Alive
  • Rank: Admiral
  • Age: 54

Before being conscripted through a world military draft to become an Admiral, Fujitora served as a defensive military chief in a kingdom in the Grand Line. As he was recently drafted, Fujitora hasn’t served with the Marines for long, causing many to wonder how he managed to become an Admiral so quickly.

Fujitora Akainu Fleet Admiral
One Piece: Could Fujitora Become The Next Fleet Admiral?

With Akainu most likely being removed by the end of One Piece, could Fujitora be the next Fleet Admiral?

With his proactive nature, Fujitora has achieved major accomplishments since joining the Marines, such as the abolition of the Warlord system. With his “Humane Justice” motto, the now 54-year-old Admiral prioritizes saving people over apprehending pirates, a habit that frequently puts him and Akainu at loggerheads.

8 Sakazuki (Akainu)

A Marine Whose Ruthless Determination Has Withstood Generations

  • Status: Alive
  • Rank: Fleet Admiral
  • Age: 55 (after timeskip)

Particularly with his usually overbearing demeanor, it’s interesting to see that the now-Fleet Admiral Akainu is even younger than Admiral Kizaru. At 55 years of age, Akainu holds the mantle of Fleet Admiral and possesses the Devil Fruit with the most offensive capabilities in the series.

Considering he was present in Ohara over two decades ago and had reached the rank of Vice Admiral even then, Akainu’s long-standing service to the Marines is apparent. With his unique and extreme form of justice, the current Fleet Admiral doesn’t seem like he’ll be toning down with age anytime soon.

7 Brannew

An Experienced Officer Trusted With The Marines’ Greatest Bounties

  • Status: Alive
  • Rank: Commodore
  • Age: 56 (after timeskip)

As a Commodore, Brannew isn’t as high-ranking as many others his age, but he is in charge of placing bounties on pirates. Despite his relatively low rank, Brannew is often seen briefing the Marines on new and upcoming threats or wars, and even his higher-ranking superiors have to listen.

Perhaps because of his many years dedicated to the Marines in conjunction with his relatively old age, Brannew is well respected by many Marines, superiors and subordinates alike. Most of his battle abilities remain unknown, but for someone who survived the Summit War of Marineford, he’s not fodder to be picked off by any run-of-the-mill pirate.

6 Borsalino (Kizaru)

The Oldest Active Admiral Still Flashing Across The Battlefield

  • Status: Alive
  • Rank: Admiral
  • Age: 58 (after timeskip)

As an Admiral, one of the first introduced in the series, Kizaru stands out as one of the most powerful and experienced of all the Marines, even among the elite Admirals. At 58, Kizaru isn’t exactly considered young and vibrant, but he remains ever-powerful.

Admiral Kizaru from One Piece
One Piece: Why Kizaru Is The Most Underrated Admiral

Despite being one of the strongest Marines, Kizaru is still quite underrated amongst the Admirals, so let's look at why this is!

1

In his time, Kizaru has witnessed the rise and fall of powerful figures like Roger and Whitebeard. With Sakazuki’s promotion, Aokiji’s departure, and Sengoku’s retirement, Kizaru serves as the only pre-time skip Admiral still serving as an Admiral, making him one to watch out for; even more so with his Pika Pika no Mi.

5 Vegapunk

The Oldest And Smartest Mind Behind Global Technology

  • Status: Deceased
  • Rank: Scientist
  • Age: 65

The genius scientist Dr. Vegapunk (Stella) lived a relatively long life, as evidenced by his white hair and overall aged appearance. While he would go to unimaginable lengths for his work and research in general, he still remained a very moral individual.

Aside from working for decades alongside the Marines, Vegapunk once also worked with MADS, a group of scientists that included infamous characters like Caesar Clown, Queen the Plague, and Vinsmoke Judge. In his many years, Vegapunk achieved a lot for the Marines and the world as a whole. Unfortunately, his defiance of the World Government led to his eventual death, even as he lives on through his satellites.

4 Tsuru

An Old Age Companion Of Garp And Sengoku

  • Status: Alive
  • Rank: Vice Admiral
  • Age: 76 (after timeskip)

While most of her abilities or battle prowess remain unknown, Tsuru is known to be a renowned pirate with sufficient authority and ability. She’s a companion of both Garp and Sengoku and, with them, was one of the more prominent Marines when the pirate king, Gol D. Roger, roamed the seas.

Garp might die in One Piece's final saga. Oda has already set up his execution.

In her past, Tsuru was fixated on capturing Doflamingo and had many run-ins with him until he became a warlord. Using both Haki and the Woshu Woshu no Mi, Tsuru remains a powerful adversary of all pirates despite her old age.

3 Bluegrass

The Perceived Older Sister Of Tsuru

  • Status: Alive
  • Rank: Vice Admiral
  • Age: 76+

As she hasn’t made her debut in the One Piece anime series, Vice Admiral Bluegrass isn’t yet well known, but her age allows her to stand out. As an Admiral older than even Garp and Sengoku, many wonder what she’s still doing in the service of the Marines, and joining Emperor-level battles no less.

Interestingly, Bluegrass is looked up to by Tsuru as an older sister. That says a lot about her age, considering Tsuru is from the same generation as Garp and Sengoku. Despite her age, Bluegrass is no liability to the Marines and even takes part in the Egghead siege.

2 Monkey D. Garp

The Battle-Hardened Veteran Who Still Shakes The World

  • Status: Alive
  • Rank: Vice Admiral
  • Age: 78 (after timeskip)

Aside from being the grandfather of Monkey D. Luffy, Garp’s charisma and overwhelming strength put him above many in terms of how he is viewed overall. Despite his old age, Garp still stands as one of the strongest characters in One Piece, as seen by the destruction he wrought on Fullalead against the Blackbeard pirates.

This makes many viewers wonder just how powerful he was in his prime. However, whatever the now-old hero of the Marines might be lacking in strength, he makes up for in experience and the legacy he’s left behind.

1 Sengoku

A Marine Legend With Strategic Might

  • Status: Alive
  • Rank: Fleet Admiral (former)
  • Age: 79 (after timeskip)

The ex-Fleet Admiral of the Marines has now retired, but during the first part of the series, he was a Marine in action. With his vast experience and powerful abilities, Sengoku led the Marines for many years, until the aftermath of the Summit War of Marineford in the Marineford arc.

Even before his retirement, Sengoku was already considered an old man, but his skills made him useful. He was able to tactically lead the Marines against Whitebeard and could even go toe-to-toe with Blackbeard. As an old-timer with groundbreaking strength, Sengoku is highly respected in One Piece.
