This article contains spoilers from the One Piece anime.

The One Piece anime is currently adapting the Egghead arc of the series and it goes without saying that it has done a more than decent job with the tools that the staff has. Apart from the pacing, the One Piece anime cannot be faulted for much, and it's quite clear to see that it has delivered absolutely immense quality over the last few months. While some episodes have been average, the vast majority of the episodes that the One Piece anime has delivered have been above average, with some even being considered as some of the best episode releases of the year.

One of the newer One Piece episodes, however, One Piece episode 1152, goes on to reveal a major change to the story that diverts from the manga itself. In the fight between Saturn and the duo of Luffy and Bonney, the One Piece anime seemingly gave Bonney access to a power that she has not yet awakened in the manga, and that is Conqueror's Haki. This has left some fans perplexed, while others are under the false impression that Bonney possesses this power, when she doesn't.

  • One Piece Anime Gave Bonney Conqueror's Haki Effects

The One Piece anime is notorious for doing things that aren't exactly canon to the manga. For instance, in the Wano arc, fans saw Prometheus, a sun homie, enter the ocean and save Big Mom from drowning, when in reality, it has already been established by Oda in the manga that Prometheus is weak to water and would die in it.

This has become a continuous trend in the Egghead arc as well, where the One Piece anime has taken its liberties and turned the story into something completely different.

For instance, Sanji's battle against S-Shark ended completely differently in the anime than it did in the manga. In the manga, it was clearly implied that Sanji was dominant in the fight against S-Shark and rescued Nami and Brook. In the anime, it was Nami who ended up saving Sanji in this fight.

Similarly, there were many other big changes that the anime made to the manga, and some others that absolutely do not even make sense. The latest one of them concerns Jewelry Bonney.

Immediately after Bonney transformed into Nika, she utilized a powerful Nika punch that was launched at Saturn alongside Luffy's very own attack. In the manga, it was quite clear that Bonney only used Armament Haki on her techniques and launched a flurry of attacks on Saturn. In the anime, however, red bolts of lightning seemed to emerge from her massive fist, which gave the fans the impression that she was utilizing Conqueror's Haki.

Listen, Luffy. Haki is a power that is dormant in everyone everywhere. The ability to sense spiritual energy and overwhelm enemies is something everyone has to some degree. But most people never discover it. To never doubt, that is true power. Now watch! Most Haki can be divided into two types or colors. — Silvers Rayleigh to Luffy in Ruskaina

Red lightning bolts are a sign of Conqueror's Haki infusion. The anime has been especially inconsistent with this indicator of Conqueror's Haki, giving it to many random characters, some of whom do not even possess Haki.

Bonney was also given these red lightning bolts, and it gave some fans the false impression that she could use Conqueror's Haki.

Bonney Does Not Have Conqueror's Haki In The Manga

To be clear, Bonney does not possess the ability to use Conqueror's Haki, and it would not make any sense for her to be able to infuse this ability at the age that she is. Bonney has access to Armament Haki, and the fact that she can use this ability at her young age is impressive enough on its own.

This is the power to overwhelm, also called the Color of the Supreme King Haki. Most people who have made a name for themselves in the world possess this power. Though you can control the Color of the Supreme King, you can't train it to be stronger directly. It is the embodiment of the spirit of the user. It only grows stronger if the user itself grows stronger. — Silvers Rayleigh explaining Conqueror's Haki to Luffy

Bonney might go on to awaken Conqueror's Haki at some point later down the line, if she has the appetite for it. But, the anime giving her this power, or at least seemingly implying that she has this power, is a blatant mistake and misdirection.

One Piece Anime Is Great, But Fans Should Read The Manga Due To The Errors

Read one piece Manga Due To The Errors

The One Piece anime is a great product. It gives the fans stunning fights, and even covers the more lore-heavy or emotion-heavy episodes very well. Overall, over the last few years, it has consistently been a good product. However, fans should absolutely avoid watching One Piece without reading the manga.

There are many inconsistencies between the two, and to actually know the true train of events, something which the anime completely makes up, fans should read the manga alongside it. Be it fights, where characters either get feats or get feats taken away from them, or other lore-specific events, where things get seemingly confirmed that aren't even true, the anime is wildly inconsistent. Reading the One Piece manga is absolutely essential for a proper experience of the story.

Eiichiro Oda's One Piece focuses on the journey of Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates as they sail the seas to lay claim to the grand treasure known as the One Piece.
