The Best War Games can share an exclusive new look at Once Upon A Puppet, an upcoming platformer published by Daedalic Entertainment. Once Upon A Puppet is slated for release on PC and consoles in late April 2025.

Originally announced in January 2024, Once Upon A Puppet is the debut title from indie developer Flatter Than Earth. The game promises to combine 2.5D platforming with puzzle-solving and action sequences, all taking place in a magical theater setting.

Ahead of the game's release, publisher Daedalic Entertainment shared some new Once Upon A Puppet screenshots, which The Best War Games can exclusively reveal. The images offer another glimpse at the puzzle platformer's environments, which were largely designed as puppet show stages. Players will take control of stagehand Nieve, who—through a magical connection—commands Drev, a puppet bound to her by magic.

By the time the game's events take place, Nieve has been exiled to the self-explanatory Understage, and is determined to travel back to the Fronstage above, with Drev at her side. Their journey to the top will see them uncover secrets, retell stories, and interact with various characters and elements of Once Upon A Puppet's magical world. As the story progresses, players will also learn more about Nieve and Drev's magical connection, which is said to be entwined with the very fate of the kingdom of theater in the game's lore. Ultimately, the duo will have to face their deepest fears to reveal the true nature of "the void" in their hearts, the game's official description reads.

Once Upon A Puppet will adopt a dual-protagonist approach to gameplay, as players will get a chance to control Drev and Nieve alike. Both will play differently on account of their unique abilities. The theater theme is said to permeate every aspect of the game—from its world and character design to a story filled with dramatic flair and a generous dose of vaudeville humor, a style of entertainment that combines slapstick comedy, music, dance, magic, and more.

Once Upon A Puppet was initially targeting a 2024 launch, but ended up being pushed back to 2025. It's currently scheduled for release on April 23. The theater-themed puzzle platformer will be available on the PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch. Once Upon A Puppet's PC version will be distributed via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The game can already be wishlisted on Steam. Daedalic Entertainment has yet to share any pricing information.
