In Once Human, water is a necessary resource not just for survival, but also for growing crops, cooking, and crafting. Getting water by hand is a long and tedious process, but thankfully, the game has Water Pumps that can do all of that for you.
Setting up Water Pumps is a little confusing at first. However, if you want a passive Acid farm in Once Human, or if you just don't want to deal with the hassle of scooping up water all the time, then learning how to make pumps work should be on the list of your priorities.
Once Human: Best Mods For Shrapnel
There are a number of mods in Once Human that players going for a Shrapnel build will want to try and loot. Here's what to pick.
How To Extract Water In Once Human
Due to there being two buildable objects called Water Pump in the game, this guide will refer to the pumps that collect water as Water Pump (Extractor), and the ones that transfer water from one object to another will be referred to as Wall Pumps.
Normally, to collect water in Once Human, you need to manually scoop water up from rivers, lakes, or the sea. If you build a Water Pump (Extractor) over dirt or sand, it'll automatically gather Dirty Water for you once you hook it up to a power source. However, you'll need to purify that Dirty Water by boiling it in a Stove or by connecting a pipe between the Extractor and a Water Purifier.
To automate water purification, do the following:
- Enter Build mode.
- Approach your Water Pump (Extractor).
- Press V to start connecting water pipes.
- Approach your water purifier, then press V again.
By default, water in pipes will flow according to gravity, so make sure your Extractor is at a higher elevation than your purifier.

Having an Atomic Lighter in Once Human is great if you want a source of cheap and effective explosives. Here's where to get this Deviant.
How To Extract Oil And Polluted Water
The kind of liquid you get from a Water Pump (Extractor) depends on where you place it. If you build it over a patch of black ground in the Blackheart or Red Sands regions, you'll get Crude Oil. If you place it over dirt or sand in a Stardust-polluted area, you'll get Polluted Water.
One good place to get Polluted Water is the Refinery Pollution Point in Once Human, which is just south of Greywater Camp in the Iron River region. You'll know if the ground you're standing on is polluted if your backpack starts ticking.
How To Set Up Water Pumps In Once Human
If you want to move water from an Extractor or Water Container to a faraway purifier or other similar production/storage facility, you'll need to use Wall Pumps. Essentially, these devices reverse the flow of water, letting you place Extractors at a lower elevation and still have liquid flow to your desired containers.
You can tell which way water is flowing by looking at the white flashing light moving from one end of a water pipe to another.
To use these small
Water Pumps, place one on a wall then connect your main Extractor to it. From the Wall Pump, attach another pipe to your desired target, be it a storage tank or a purifier. Also, make sure to connect the Wall Pump to a power source like Once Human's Hydraulic Generators or any other facility that's already powered up.
