Farming crops and flowers in Once Human may not be necessary to success, but if players want to get those high-value consumables right from the comfort of their own base, then learning how to farm efficiently is going to be an important skill to learn. It's not a complicated process by any means, but some parts of it can be.
While certain Deviants like Once Human's Buzzy Bee and Growshroom help with the actual planting, keeping your crops well-watered is a different story. Luckily, you won't have to manually water your plants. You can automate the entire process by following this short guide on how to use the Automatic Irrigation System.
How To Automate Irrigation In Once Human
Making an automated sprinkler system for your crops is fairly easy. Assuming that you've already unlocked all the necessary memetics for irrigation, you'll need to build the following:
- Water Pump
- Water Filter
- Water Tank
- Automatic Irrigation Facility
- A power source (Generators, solar panels, etc)
First, players must understand how Water Pumps work in Once Human. The flow of water is determined by gravity, which means your source of water (in this case, the Water Pump), must be at a higher elevation than your Water Filter or Water Tank. If you can't place your water extractor on higher ground, then build a small, wall-mounted Water Pump. Connect your extractor to the pump, then connect the pump to your filter.
Now, for the step-by-step process of automating your irrigation system:
- Build and place the Water Pump, Water Filter, Water Tank, and Automatic Irrigation Facility
- Connect the Water Pump and Water Filter to a power source
- Attach a pipe from the Water Pump to the Water Filter
- Attach a pipe from the Water Filter to the Water Tank
- Add yet another pipe from the Water Tank to the Automatic Irrigation Facility
- Hook the Automatic Irrigation Facility up to your base's power source
Once everything is connected, you'll automatically get Dirty Water from the pump, which will then be converted into Purified Water by the filter. Clean water will then be stored in the Water Tank, and it will flow directly to your sprinkler. As long as your base has power and your Water Tank has Purified Water, the Automatic Irrigation System will continue to sprinkle water all over your crops.
Rainwater Collection Systems can work in place of a Water Pump, but they are generally unreliable if rain doesn't often fall on your base.
Target Irrigation
You may notice that your Automatic Irrigation Systems have a Target Irrigation option when you hover your crosshair over them. This controls how much water your sprinkler will dispense — this is important as different plants require different irrigation levels. Always set Target Irrigation to a value that supports all the plants within the sprinkler's vicinity. Alternatively, the Rain Man Deviant in Once Human will keep your plants watered in place of an automatic irrigator, though they can only tend to one crop at a time.
