As survival horror games go, Once Human is somewhat unique. Combining an intriguing story, with some tough boss fights, and a pretty good base building and crafting system. The game is free-to-play, but there is an optional monthly battle pass available as well.
Once Human: 8 Best Hunting Locations
Hunting animals is key to finding upgrade resources in Once Human, making these hunting locations ideal spots to revisit during a playthrough.
It has to be said that the crafting system for cooking food and making drinks is rather lackluster in Once Human. Yes, there are some very useful recipes, but almost all of them are gated behind rare deviated crops. However, there are a few recipes that are quite easy to craft, that can be very beneficial for a player to carry in their inventory.
7 Orange Or Blueberry Soda
Everyday Hydration
Keeping hydrated is important in Once Human. As a player’s hydration drops, so does their stamina. Harvesting resources, running, and gliding using V (the bird NPC, not the key), all use stamina.
Once Human: 7 Best Map Areas To Unlock First
Progressing from map zone to map zone in the correct order, is the best way to gain access to needed resources in Once Human.
There are easier recipes to craft, such as boiled water, which will add hydration, but not to the same extent as soda. Basic boiled water adds 30 hydration, and soda adds 50. This means that carrying a decent volume of soda shots is much lighter than the hydration equivalent of boiled water. Oranges are easy to grow, and glass is simple to craft.
6 Steak Combo
Everyday Nourishment
-
Ingredients:
- 1 x Meat (any)
-
1 x
Salt
-
Effects:
- Energy +50
Hydration has a direct impact on stamina in Once Human, but energy needs to be kept at a good level too, as this impacts how much the player can carry. Food gives energy, whilst drink gives hydration. Steak Combo is an excellent, easy-to-craft dish that can serve as an everyday food.
However, this is a protein-rich dish, meaning it will build fat and muscle mass. Living on a diet of just Steak Combo will result in the player putting on weight. Being overweight has some bonuses and downsides. For players who want to put on weight, this is a good food to eat. Others may find a plant-based food more suitable.
5 Safety Sandwich
PvP Food
- Ingredients:
-
Effects:
- Reduces PvP damage (from players) by 20%
The Safety Sandwich is only really of use on a PvP server when playing Once Human. When eaten, it reduces incoming damage from other players by 20%. It won’t reduce incoming damage from auto turrets or automated explosions though.
Here we see one of the downsides of the cooking system in Once Human. To craft a stack of this useful food to be used in PvP combat is going to need quite a few Deviated Cucumbers, which are pretty rare. It is unlikely a player will be able to craft more than one Safety Sandwich at a time, and not regularly.
4 Ghost Cookies
Disappear For A While
Grants invisibility for 3 minutes (Attacking removes effect)
Ghost Cookies are a good utility food for certain situations when playing Once Human. A good use of this food is when searching for gear crates or mystical crates. Generally, this would require wiping out every enemy in a POI to explore and locate the crates.
Once Human: 6 Best Mesmetics For The Endgame
There are many memetics to unlock in Once Human, but some are more useful than others in the endgame.
By using Ghost Cookies, the player has three minutes to run around the POI, searching for the crates. Once located, they can deal with the local enemies, loot the crate, and then leave. But once again, this recipe is gated behind a deviant crop, tomatoes in this case.
3 Assorted Canned Fruit
Boss Killing Food
-
Ingredients:
- 1 x Deviated Beet
-
1 x
Coconut
- 1 x Aluminum
-
Effects:
- Increases weak spot damage by 25% when sanity is above 80%.
Boss fights can be tough in Once Human, especially when trying to solo bosses in hard mode. Assorted Canned Fruit can help with this. It won’t work for every boss, specifically those who are in an instance that has a permanent sanity drain.
The good news with this recipe is that most players will grow beets in their base, as it is used for the Sanity Gummy recipe. This means that they will regularly harvest at least one or two Deviated Beet, which is the hardest of the ingredients to source for crafting Assorted Canned Fruit.
2 Fruit Tea
Sanity And Hydration In One
-
Ingredients:
- 1 x Cornflower
- 1 x Water (boiled or purified)
-
Effects:
- Hydration +50
- Sanity +400
The sanity mechanic in Once Human can become unmanageable at times. It is not uncommon for a player to end up with 75% or more of their health bar blocked out by their insanity level. Therefore, it is important to carry food or medication to clear at least some insanity.
Once Human: 7 Best Fishing Locations
Fishing is a pleasant way to pass some time playing Once Human, and the fish caught can be used to cook food.
Fruit Tea is a great recipe for dealing with insanity and also providing hydration at the same time. Cornflower can be grown in decent volumes at a player base, and water is easy enough to come by.
1 Sanity Gummy
Always Carry A Few
-
Ingredients:
- 1 x Beet
- 1 x Sugar
-
Effects:
- Sanity +500
Once again, this is a food that deals with the player’s sanity meter. It restores more sanity than Fruit Tea, in an easy-to-craft recipe. A single Sanity Gummy just needs some sugar (made from Beet) and a Beet. So two Beet for one Sanity Gummy.
Beet can be farmed in the player base, and this provides the chance for the player to receive Deviated Beet now and then, which can be used to craft the aforementioned Assorted Canned Food. Overall, this is one of the simplest recipes in Once Human, but one of the most useful of all.
