With the “The Way of Winter” update, Once Human has introduced temperature mechanics to its already chaotic post-apocalyptic world. Players will now need to learn how to survive and adapt to extreme weather conditions, making survival more challenging.
The temperature mechanics in Once Human can be explained by two factors: temperature and resistance. Temperature fluctuates depending on location, weather patterns, time of day, surroundings, and specific items. Resistance, on the other hand, determines your ability to withstand extreme temperatures. The higher your resistance, the less impact the weather will have on you. There are multiple types of temperature states in Once Human, ranging from freezing cold to scorching heat, and this guide covers the best strategies for surviving them.
Once Human: How to Get Leftovers
Leftovers are a crafting material in Once Human’s The Way of Winter scenario. Here’s how you can get more of them.
All Temperature States in Once Human
The table below details all the temperature states in Once Human, along with the effects they have on your Meta.
|
Temperature State |
Temperature Range |
Temperature Effects |
|---|---|---|
|
Frost |
In the Frost state, Metas rapidly lose energy and body temperature, resulting in hypothermia. Every three seconds, they get inflicted with 1 stack of Frozen, leading to a 5% health loss per second and a decrease in movement speed. If they reach four stacks of Frozen, the Meta dies instantly. |
|
|
Chilly |
-45°C to -15°C |
When in the Chilly state, the Meta’s energy and body temperature drop quickly. |
|
Cozy |
-15°C to 40°C |
The Cozy state is optimum for survival in The Way of Winter. In this state, the Meta’s body temperature returns to normal. |
|
Heat |
40°C to 70°C |
As you venture into warmer areas or approach heat-generating sources or enemies, you'll enter the Heat state. In this state, Metas lose hydration and gain body temperature, leading to Heatstroke. |
|
Blaze |
> 70°C |
In the Blaze state, Metas rapidly lose Hydration and their heatstroke becomes more severe. Every three seconds, they get inflicted with 1 stack of Combustion, which leads to a 5% health loss and a 1% decrease in gear durability per second. If they reach four stacks of Combustion, the Meta dies instantly. |
You can check your current temperature state by opening up your inventory and clicking on the thermometer in the lower right corner.
How To Survive Extreme Weather in Once Human
To survive in Once Human, you’ll want to keep your body temperature in a Cozy state. A single misstep in managing the cold or heat can result in hypothermia or heatstroke, respectively. Here are a few things you can do to combat the extreme weather conditions in Once Human:
Wear The Right Gear
First things first, you need to equip gear that increases your resistance to cold or heat. Thanks to the new update, animals, like Reindeer and Bears, can now produce different types of Rawhides that can be used to craft gear.
With Rawhides, you can craft tops or pants that provide temperature resistance, allowing you to withstand both extreme cold and heat. Interestingly, there’s a new type of item called Leftovers which can be used to repair armor instead of Rawhides.
Each area of The Way of Winter has different temperature states. For instance, in the icy Vena Fjord and Onyx Tundra, you’ll need gear that gives you Cold Resist, while gear with Heat Resist can help you survive the fiery heat of Ember Strand.
Certain weapons in Once Human have also been modified to include temperature effects, like the Torch and Frozen Northern Pike. Holding onto these will change the environmental temperature around you.
Eat Appropriate Foods
Foods can make all the difference when it comes to temperature regulation in the Way of Winter scenario. The right dishes in Once Human can boost your resistance to extreme temperatures and increase your chances of survival. Consuming crops grown in the Snowy Realm can boost your resistance to extreme resistance.
For instance, eating Sunny Ginger, Polar Pepper, or Spikemato found in the Onyx Tundra boosts your Cold Resistance for five minutes, while Mint and Ice Melon increase your Heat Resistance. Try to prepare dishes using these ingredients for stronger resistance effects and an easy way to regulate your body temperature.
Once Human: Best Places To Farm Acid
Players on the hunt for Acid in Once Human should focus their attention on the following farming locations.
Be Mindful Of Swimming
Swimming in water will put your Meta in a Dampened state, which affects their temperature resistance. When Dampened, your character's ability to withstand heat increases. On the other hand, the Dampened state decreases your Cold resistance, meaning you’ll be more susceptible to freezing.
Build Temperature Control Facilities
As you progress in The Way of Winter, you can unlock new temperature control facilities through your Memetics in Once Human. These structures can change the surrounding temperature, provided you supply fuel. If you’re in colder regions, you’ll want to set up warmth-producing facilities, like Campfires and Burning Oil Drums, to keep warm and avoid freezing to death. You can also add a simple Vintage Stove to regulate the temperature around your base.
Use Tools and Tactical Items
Carrying certain items, like Heatium and Coldium, can help you combat extreme temperatures. These tools can be unlocked from The Way of Winter's Memetic system. You can craft Heatium at the Supplies Workbench after unlocking the Polar Expedition Memetic. Heatium gives you a Cold Resist effect, while Coldium makes you resistant to heat. These effects last for one hour.
The Frost Grenade is another tactical item that instantly lowers the temperature within its blast radius, creating a temporary cool zone. Several existing tactical items, like the Molotov Cocktail and Thermite Grenade, have also been updated with temperature-altering effects,
Build A Thermal Tower
When The Way of Winter scenario enters its second phase, you’ll get the chance to unlock the Thermal Tower under Memetics. The Thermal Tower can alter the temperature of its surroundings. It can only be placed outside your territory in Once Human.
To keep the Thermal Tower operational, you must consistently supply it with Chaosium. Over time, you can upgrade the Thermal Tower to improve its temperature control and get other bonuses. The greater a Thermal Tower’s temperature effects and radiation range, the more Chaosium it requires. If you run out of Chaosium, the Thermal Tower will stop working.
