The fall 2025 anime season is in full swing, with each series in this season's line-up being at least a few episodes in. The fall 2025 catalog has some notable heavy hitters, like My Hero Academia, Spy x Family, and One-Punch Man. But there are also plenty of new anime that have been standing out.

While we often focus on how seasonal anime are received on our side of the world, Japan's thoughts on certain titles might differ from how we see them. Official data from Japanese streaming site Niconico has revealed the top series from the fall catalog based on the site's viewership. Some familiar names pop up in the top 10, but the top 5 series this season might surprise some fans.

Japan's Top Anime of Fall 2025 Might Turn Some Heads

There was a pretty short list of the most anticipated anime this season. My Hero Academia's final season has been a series fans have been looking forward to all year. Anime fans were excited to see Anya and the rest of the Forge family return for Spy x Family's 3rd season. To Your Eternity came back with a new season, and One-Punch Man returned following a divisive season 2. But none of those titles cracked the top 5 in Niconico's rankings.

  1. Style of Hiroshi Nohara's Lunch
  2. Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi's Zany Class
  3. Tojima Wants To Be a Kamen Rider
  4. May I Ask For One Final Thing?
  5. Dusk Beyond The End of the World
  6. Gnosia
  7. Spy x Family Season 3
  8. My Hero Academia: Final Season
  9. Hero Without a Class: Who Even Needs Skills?!
  10. Touring After the Apocalypse

While My Hero and Spy x Family did place in the top 10, it seems like Japanese audiences are drawn towards newer titles this season. Most of the top 10 anime listed in these rankings haven't gotten nearly as much attention as the two Weekly Shonen Jump heavy-hitters have. When you look at the top 5, the first and second-place anime are both spin-offs of popular titles in Japan.

Spin-offs Reign Supreme in New Rankings

Style of Hiroshi Nohara's Lunch is a spin-off of the iconic Crayon Shin-chan, focusing on Shin-chan's father, Hiroshi, and his daily lunch breaks. It's an incredibly cozy series that newcomers to the franchise can enjoy just as easily as fans of the original series.

Similarly, Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi's Zany Class is a spin-off that features the cast of Gintama as students, with Gintoki playing the role of teacher. The comedy is really similar to that of the main Gintama series, making it stand out among other comedies from this season.

Rounding out the top 5, Tojima Wants To Be a Kamen Rider focuses on 40-year-old Tanzaburou Toujima, who's spent his whole life dreaming of becoming a Kamen Rider. With reality starting to settle in, he's drawn into a conflict that once again sparks his childhood dream. It's easy to see why Japanese audiences are being drawn to this series, given how popular the Kamen Rider franchise is. As far as spin-offs go, this is definitely one of the more creative premises.

May I Ask For One Final Thing? Is an interesting revenge story, where a young noble named Scarlet is betrayed by her fiancé after he breaks off their engagement and spreads lies about her. Accused of being a bully, Scarlet sets out to get even with him and his allies. You won't find many anime like this in the fall 2025 catalog, so it's easy to see why this stands out so much to some viewers.

Dusk Beyond The End of the World is an anime original series from studio P.A. Works. After being shot while protecting his foster sister, a renowned AI developer, from being shot, Akira Himegami is put into cryogenic sleep and wakes up 200 years later in an apocalyptic future. A mysterious organization called OWEL sets out to control all pre-apocalyptic tech, with Akira finding himself in their crosshairs. Having been saved by an android named Yugure, the two set out to find Akira's sister, who he believes is still alive.
