This can make it incredibly difficult to figure out which one is the original game. But the first Wordle and the subject of this article is the New York Times Games version. Other versions will have different answers, and therefore the hints and help in this article will not be much help for variants. That being said, here's a breakdown of the rules of how to play.
The first thing a new Wordle player will have to learn to do is choose a great starting word. This word is going to need to follow all the rules of the game and also have a good selection of letters as well.
- Wordle answers are always five letters long and a real English word.
- Answers cannot be a plural noun ending in S or a proper noun.
- Just about all Wordle answers are American spellings of words, like FIBER over FIBRE.
- First words should have a good variety of common letters in five-letter words, like R, S, and I.
- Wordle answers do not repeat as of this writing.
Given these rules, players can pick a good five-letter Wordle word and type it into the first line of the Wordle grid. Press enter. The letters will then change colors.
- Letters that turn green are right and in the right place(s) in the word.
- Letters that become yellow are right but in the wrong place(s) in the word.
- Gray letters won't be in the answer of the day at all.
After getting clues from the starting word, players will need to try a new word and get more color-coded clues. The New York Times Games version of Wordle allows for a total of six tries before a player loses. Puzzles reset daily at midnight local time.
