Observer is a 2017 horror game that shook up the genre, but still struggled with broad appeal. The Rutger Hauer-voiced sci-fi title tasked players with hacking the minds of murder victims, slowly unraveling a mind-bending story clue by clue. While at its heart Observer is an adventure game, it also features several stealth sequences that give it more of a traditional horror atmosphere. Now, Bloober Team is announcing that's going to bring Observer to a new generation.

Wednesday morning, Observer System Redux was announced to the world, with Bloober Team's sci-fi horror game confirmed to be coming to next-gen consoles. In a short tweet, Bloober Team dropped a message with little information other than that a full reveal for Observer System Redux is in progress.

In the hours since, the new Observer System Redux Twitter account has received several questions regarding whether it's a remaster of the original game. Its oddly chosen to reply to at least two of them, saying "We will reveal more details soon." That the account would go out of its way to do this implies that perhaps Observer System Redux is more than just a remaster.

The only other information revealed is an odd date listed that's somewhat confusing. Prior to the announcement of Observer System Redux, a different tweet was posted that said, "Incoming Call Teaser - 23.01.2020." Bloober Team is Polish, so its dates would list the day, then the month and year, so the teaser then seems to reference January 23. Perhaps it was meant to reference April 21, or perhaps something else.

While Observer System Redux could be just a remaster of Observer upscaling visuals for next-gen consoles, it could be an Observer sequel. It could have new story content or new gameplay features. Observer was criticized for being somewhat thin at launch, so Bloober might be expanding on it. Until Bloober confirms, it's anyone's guess what's in store.

The biggest clue could be the fact that Bloober Team currently doesn't have any official games announced. Both Layers of Fear 2 and Blair Witch were released in 2019. Bloober is certainly working on something new. That something could be Observer System Redux, a larger project than just a simple remaster. After all, they made an entirely new Twitter account for it and are teasing it like it's a big announcement. There's something more to this story than just a remaster.

Observer is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
