Summary

  • Skyblivion, a fan remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's engine, is set for a 2025 release.
  • The project is near completion, with landscaping, interiors, quests, and models mostly done.
  • Volunteers play a crucial role in mod development, seeking assistance for finishing touches.

Skyblivion, the long-awaited fan remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's engine, has released a new development diary heading into 2025, detailing exactly what needs to be completed before it can be released. The massive Skyrim mod is currently locked in for a 2025 release, and it looks on track to stick to that.

Skyrim's ongoing popularity over 13 years after its launch is primarily due to its impressive modding community. Creative modders continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in the Skyrim engine, with everything from minor quality-of-life mods to extensive overhauls released regularly. One recent Skyrim mod even added a classic Fallout: New Vegas feature. In Skyblivion's case, recreating an entirely different game is a totally different beast, especially with a team of unpaid volunteers over a long period of time. To the team's credit, though, the finish line is in sight.

Money is one of Skyrim's many grinds. Here's how players can make a fortune quickly without resorting to glitches and exploits.

In a video posted on YouTube, the Skyblivion team gave an overview of the project as it stands at the end of December 2024. The video was essentially a progress report, sharing exactly what needs to be finished before the Skyblivion mod is ready for release. Most of the world's landscaping is complete, as are the interiors, quests, and 3D models. There are bits and pieces to finish up in every category, but it certainly doesn't seem too far off. The navmeshing of the world seems to be the furthest away right now, and it's an extremely important step. Navmeshing essentially tells NPCs where they can and can't go in the worldspace, and there's still plenty of this to complete.

Skyblivion Development Update (December 2024)

Skyblivion has been releasing development updates for a long time now, giving fans a look at what they can expect to experience when it eventually launches. The purpose of these updates is twofold - to preview the mod, obviously, but also to seek out volunteers. Skyblivion has been a mammoth undertaking, but it has only been possible with dedicated volunteers offering their talents for free over the years.

If rumors are to be believed, Skyblivion may not be the only remake of Oblivion gamers will be able to play in 2025. Late last month, rumors emerged that an official Oblivion remake may be announced soon, with an announcement expected at an upcoming Xbox Direct event later this month. Nothing is confirmed at this point, but it would certainly be fascinating to compare the two projects, should this official remake come to fruition.
