When the original season of Obi-Wan Kenobi was released in 2022 on Disney Plus, it provided a blast of nostalgia for many Star Wars fans. Fans have long wanted to see what the iconic Jedi did between the third and fourth movies, and his confrontation with Darth Vader was epic.

Since that point, everything about the series has been relatively quiet. Industry insider Daniel Richtman has reported that a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi is now in development at Lucasfilm, which will likely see the story continue from where it left off. The 81% rated show on Rotten Tomatoes was a hit, but bringing it back opens up the possibility for a previously scrapped George Lucas idea to finally be brought to life.

George Lucas Had Planned A Star Wars Show That Got Scrapped

One Star Wars: Underworld Idea could Be Revived In Obi-Wan Kenobi

George Lucas is the brainchild behind the Star Wars franchise, and while many of his incredible ideas saw the light of day, plenty didn't. One of his biggest plans was to create a television show that would bridge the gap between Episodes III and IV. The show was set to showcase a slightly darker side of the galaxy, hence the name Star Wars: Underworld. Ultimately, that show took place, but one of the ideas that Lucas had could end up being brought back within Obi-Wan Kenobi's upcoming second season. Lucas wanted Obi-Wan Kenobi to return to Coruscant to face off against Darth Maul in one epic final showdown between the two characters.

It would have explored Maul's rise to dominance again, with Obi-Wan seeking revenge for the fact that he killed his master, Qui-Gon Jinn. It's a concept that sounds terrific on paper, and while it never materialized in the way that Lucas did, Obi-Wan Kenobi seems like the ideal show to bring it to life. There's no reason for great ideas to be left to waste just because they didn't work at the time, and this is a perfect example of that. Another battle between two of Star Wars' most popular characters is something that everyone would be interested in seeing, especially since their original duel remains one of the greatest in the history of the franchise.

LucasFilm Should Look To Tap Into George Lucas' Original Plans For Obi-Wan

Sometimes, ideas are left on the cutting room floor and never see the light of day again, but the idea of Obi-Wan fighting Darth Maul is one that's too good to be wasted. While the timeline that the first season took the show on might mean that making this the focal point of the season isn't possible, that doesn't mean that it cannot be added in. The first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi saw plenty of flashback scenes as the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker was fleshed out in more detail to show the true brotherhood that they formed. In the second season, Obi-Wan's journey to find Darth Maul is something that can be played out in flashbacks, either across the entire season as one ongoing storyline or as an entire episode that is dedicated to the storyline.

Lucas had a great idea with this particular story, and if it's not brought back in a show dedicated to Obi-Wan himself, then it's unlikely that it will ever end up happening. The timing is right for it, and audiences would certainly love to see it. This could also play into Qui-Gon Jinn being brought back to the Star Wars franchise. He turned up right at the end of the first season as a Force Ghost to talk to Obi-Wan, and this is how the storyline could be brought to life for the viewers as they discuss what happened, tying everything up for that particular story.

The version of Obi-Wan that is shown in this series very much leans towards the prequels, which taps into that fanbase. It's something that various Star Wars projects are doing now, and seeing Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen back together again served that audience in the first season. This time, that could be achieved by bringing Darth Maul back, who is often considered to be one of the high points of the prequel movies. He wasn't part of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace for long, but the Sith Lord certainly made an impact during his time, and given that his popularity has only grown since due to other Star Wars projects, bringing him back would appeal to a lot of people. The brilliance of this particular idea is that it wouldn't feel forced as the story itself makes sense, while it would provide enough nostalgia that it could attract lapsed Star Wars fans back to view Obi-Wan Kenobi.
