A talented fan has created a hilarious trailer for the historical Viking epic The Northman, set to the theme of the recently released trailer for Marvel Studios' upcoming film, Thor: Love and Thunder.
Appropriately titled The Thorthman, the trailer opens by mimicking the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer from Marvel Studios by showing The Northman's protagonist Amleth (Alexander Skarsgard) aging from child to adult as he runs across the screen. The trailer utilizes the same rendition of Gun's & Roses rock melody "Sweet Child O' Mine" but instead uses voiceover and dialogue from The Northman. The rest of the trailer recounts the story of The Northman, including Amleth's signature line: "I will avenge you father, I will kill save you, mother, I will kill you Fjölnir." The trailer even ends on a darkly comedic beat as Amleth repeatedly headbutts someone for way too long.
The trailer was created by YouTuber thatmattcaronguy, who has utilized their skills to create other entertaining fan trailers and videos. This includes a mashup of Venom and Mad Max: Fury Road, as well as the Showtime series Yellowjackets set to the upbeat theme from Golden Girls. The Northman is the latest film from director Robert Eggers, the visionary filmmaker behind such films as The Witch and The Lighthouse. Eggers also co-wrote the script, which is based on the legend of Amleth, the bases for William Shakespeare's famous tragedy, Hamlet. Like Shakespeare's play, The Northman tells the story of Amleth, a Viking warrior who sets off on a quest to avenge his fallen father King Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke), who was betrayed and slain by his brother, Fjölnir (Claes Bang). The film premiered in theaters in April of this year and was met with largely critical appraise. The film was noted for its brutal violence, as well as Skarsgard's intense performance and its breathtaking visuals.
Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth movie focused on the Marvel character inspired by Norse mythology, is set to premiere in theaters on July 8th. Marvel Studios has now released several trailers of the upcoming film, featuring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, who is reprising her role as Jane Foster for the first time in the MCU since 2013's Thor: The Dark World. The trailers also gave fans an extended look at the new Jane, who has taken up the mantle of Thor, likely in the original Thor's absence.
Equally exciting, director Taika Waititi is returning to direct Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi also directed 2017's Thor: Ragnorak and is credited for essentially reinventing the character of Thor and setting a new comedic tone within the MCU. Based on the trailers, Thor: Love and Thunder will feature plenty of Waititi's signature comedic tone and themes, making it one of the year's most anticipated films.
The Northman is available in theaters and on VOD.
