Getting better and stronger equipment is one of the main ways to increase the player character's power level in No Rest for the Wicked. Not only does upgrading weapons and armor make the game easier to tackle, but it's practically a requirement for chewing through the massive health bars of some of the optional bosses later in the game.

Depending on the level of investment, this can result in a massive increase in DPS and a huge survivability boost. Luckily, the process is fairly simple. Here is how it works.

How To Upgrade Equipment In No Rest For The Wicked

Weapons and armor can only be upgraded via the blacksmith. Here is how to unlock his services:

  1. Save Fillmore from the Risen in Mariner's Keep.
  2. Defeat Warrick the Torn (the first boss enemy).
  3. Enter Sacrament.
  4. Talk to Fillmore in the Marketplace and select the 'Upgrade' option.
  5. Select the weapon or armor piece to upgrade.

Upgrading items requires a fee and the appropriate crafting materials. Raw materials like ores and wood need to be processed before they can be used for upgrades. All processing units can be found for sale at Danos in the main square next to the War Room.

All Equipment Is Split Into Tiers

Tier 1 weapons and armor only require basic crafting materials and a little bit of gold to be upgraded; Tier 2 items require rare resources and more gold, and so on. Item tiers are visible by hovering over the item in the equipment menu and looking at the diamond in the top right corner of the context screen.

Weapon Shards are required to upgrade weapons, and Armor Shards are required to upgrade armors. Both can be obtained as random drops from chests and are fairly common. The shards need to be combined with a crafting material.

Low tier items require very few materials to be upgraded.

The basic materials for upgrading are Copper Ingots and Pine Planks for weapons and Craft Leathers and Jute Garments for armors.

Copper Ingots

The blacksmith, Fillmore, carries an infinite supply of Copper Ingots sold at the price of 12 Copper. Copper ore mined using Pickaxe can be processed into Copper Ingots at a Furnace. Furnace can be bought from Danos for 3 Silver and 85 Copper.

Pine Planks

The woodcutter, Whittacker, carries an infinite supply of Pine Planks sold at the price of 8 Copper. Pine Wood can be obtained by cutting down Pine Trees, which can then be turned into Pine Planks at a Sawmill. Sawmill can be bought from Danos for 2 Silver and 80 Copper.

Craft Leather

Both Craft Leather and Jute Garment can be bought from Mira and Meri, the clothing vendors in Sacrament for 12 Copper each. They carry an infinite supply. Basic Hide can be converted into Craft Leather at a Tanning Rack. Tanning Rack can be bought from Danos for 2 Silver and 90 Copper.

Jute Garment

Jute Garments can also be bought from Mira and Meri for 12 Copper. Jute threads can be converted into Jute Garments via a Spinning Wheel. Spinning Wheel can be bought from Danos for 3 Silver.

Grinnich, the general goods vendor, sells both Copper Ingots and Pine Wood for 12 Coppers and Jute threads for 11 Copper, but he only has three of each, unlike the specialty merchants.
