Cooking in No Rest for the Wicked is a core part of the gameplay loop. Players cook dishes, fight enemies, and eat to restore health. Since there is no health regeneration except in rare circumstances, and alternative means of healing like spells and lifesteal become available a little ways into the game, the only way to recover lost HP during the early stages is through cooking.

Even in the beginning, the island of Sacrament is unforgiving and brutal, and one small mistake can result in fights turning disastrous. Stocking up on health-restoring dishes before heading out quickly becomes standard practice once players start getting into the flow of the game, so it is vital that gamers know how to cook in No Rest for the Wicked.

How to Cook in No Rest for the Wicked

No Rest for the Wicked players can cook meals for themselves at any fire pit in the game. Simply walk up to one and interact with it to bring up the cooking menu. All known cooking recipes will be visible on the right screen, and if the ingredients are available, the recipe will be selectable. If they're unavailable, the recipe will be grayed out. Multiple dishes can be cooked quickly by increasing the count from the cook screen.

Once a meal is cooked, it will be stored in the Consumables tab. Since most dishes serve as a means of recovering health or focus, players will want to place them in the hot bar. This can be done both from the inventory (click on the dish) and in the overworld (hold the Consumables key bind in the overworld and scroll over to the cooked dish).

There is a forced 5-second delay between eating cooked meals, which means cooking a few meals that restore more health is better than cooking a lot of meals that only replenish a little bit.

How to Learn New Recipes in No Rest for the Wicked

The only dish players will be able to cook at the beginning of No Rest for the Wicked is Mushroom Soup, which heals for 35 HP on consumption. Mushroom Soup can be cooked by combining 1x Mushroom and 1x Artemisia Herb.

Players will need to unlock the ability to cook new dishes by using a cooking recipe, a one-time-use consumable item that'll give the player character knowledge of how to cook the dish. You cannot cook anything without first knowing the recipe.

Merchants often sell recipes for a sum of gold. The earliest recipes are sold by Fillmore, the blacksmith just outside Sacrament's gates. More recipes become available after players defeat Warrick the Torn and enter the main city.

Fillmore sells Crab Chowder recipe (1x Horseshoe Crab + 1x Artemisia Herb) for 30 Coppers. Crab Chowder also heals for 35 HP.
