No More Heroes 3 is the newest numbered entry into the series in 10 years. The game, announced earlier this year at Nintendo's E3 2019 showcase, was first introduced through a red-haring trailer showcasing a worn-down, haggard looking man in a bath robe and boxer shorts. Only halfway through the trailer do we finally see that this man is none other than the game's hero, Travis Touchdown.
During the pre-show for The Game Awards, one of the earlier world premiers showcased the classic Nintendo Switch logo clicking into place. The trailer began with a beautifully hand-drawn animated cinematic of a young boy discovering an alien crash-landing in what appears to be Japan. The trailer quickly hit a complete tonal shift, and ended with the surprise reveal of No More Heroes 3.
The trailer begins with a young boy launching a model rocket into the sky, while riding his bike home he sees a meteor crash land nearby and investigates. The boy finds a small, injured alien creature and decides to take it home and care for it in a secret.
Shortly after, the duo goes back to the crater and discover an object left behind, with the boy joyfully stating they'll be best friends forever. The alien creature then begins working on restoring a rocket ship to put launch him back into space, though he promises to return to the boy in the future.
The trailer then skips forward far into the future, where the boy, who's now grown into a young man, is reunited with the alien. However, the alien has changed quite a bit in the time the two have been apart. To cap it off, the trailer ends with a fake-out title reveal that is pretty surprising in and of itself, before Travis Touchdown smashes through the title card on a motorcycle revealing the trailer to actually be for No More Heroes 3.
The No More Heroes series saw a recent spin-off release in Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes earlier this year. Though the game was met with a somewhat mixed reception, the game was recently released on PS4 and PC on October 14. Before that, the title was an exclusive on Nintendo Switch.
The series creator, Goichi Suda more commonly known as 'Suda51,' has been known for his outgoing and eccentric personality that shows through in a lot of his work. A couple of years ago, Suda51 even joked about how he would love to create a Super Mario Bros. Game, and his ideas definitely fit with the style of the No More Heroes series.
Suda51 has recently commented on the progress on the team working on No More Heroes 3, saying that the game is about 35-40 percent finished. Though this most recent trailer did not end with a definitive release date, the game is confirmed to release in 2020 exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
