Since its rocky launch, No Man’s Sky has gone from strength to strength. Hello Games promised that all DLC and new content would be free, forever, to make up for the state of the game at launch, a promise they have delivered on time and time again. The game's latest update, Aquarius, adds new features to this open-world game, including fishing.
No Man's Sky: Adrift - Best New Features
No Man's Sky: Adrift adds a new expedition, and several new rewards including a pet and a ship.
As usual for NMS, a new major update also means a new community expedition, and the Aquarius Expedition is all about fishing. The player is sent to discover certain types of worlds and catch specific fish whilst visiting them. The expedition offers some good rewards, most of which are quite easy to unlock.
6 The Celeste
A Cool-Looking Hauler Ship
- The free starter ship for the Aquarius Expedition.
- Limited cargo space at first.
Every player who begins the No Man’s Sky Aquarius Expedition is given a free ship to start with. Instead of the usual Radiant Pillar fighter class ship that is often given as a starter ship, this time around, it is The Celeste, which is a pretty unique-looking hauler. The great thing about using this ship for the Aquarius Expedition is that it has a flat roof, and can be used as a mobile fishing platform very easily, as it can land/hover over water while the player stands on top and fishes from it.
No Man's Sky: Orbital – All Station Interior Facilities And How To Find Them
No Man's Sky: Orbital update changed up the locations of the Station Interior Facilities. Here is where to find all of them.
The Celeste is only a class C ship, and it has limited cargo slots at first. However, as part of the expedition rewards, the player is given a number of cargo upgrades for the ship, and by the end of the expedition, they will have received various technology updates for the ship as well. The result is a fairly capable ship to begin exploring the rest of the game once the expedition is complete. If the player is willing to earn and spend enough units to upgrade the ship further, it could become the main ship they use.
5 Bait Recipes
Specialized Bait And Lures
- Different bait recipes are given at certain points in the expedition.
- The player also has the option of using other items as bait to experiment.
The No Man’s Sky Aquarius Expedition is all about fishing. Almost every step of the expedition involves catching special fish, or completing fishing-related activities. For example, the player will be tasked with catching a number of fish that can only be caught at night, or during the day. At each of these stages, the player is given a small amount of special bait to attract the right type of fish, and a recipe to craft more of it.
By the end of the expedition, the player will have around 10 different bait recipes that they can craft. Additionally, other substances such as slime, mold, and even raw resources can be used as bait, and the player is free to experiment and find out which works the best in different scenarios.
4 Deep-Sea Armor
Chunky-Looking Deep Sea Diver's Armor
- Sturdy-looking, complete with diving helmet and flippers.
- Given at various stages of the expedition.
In keeping with the long tradition of rewarding players with cosmetic items for completing an expedition, No Man’s Sky's Aquarius Expedition gives a complete cosmetic set of armor. It looks like an old-fashioned diving suit used by deep-sea divers, and is one of the better-looking cosmetic overhauls to date.
The player doesn’t receive every part of the armor at once, however. Instead, they get one or two items for completing several phases of the expedition. By the end of the expedition, they'll have the complete Deep-Sea Armor set. Then they just need to visit an appearance modification terminal, equip it, and color it how they wish.
3 Aquarius Flight Pack
End Of Expedition Reward
- Arguably the best-looking backpack in the game.
- The player must complete the entire expedition to unlock it.
After completing phase 5 of the No Man’s Sky Aquarius Expedition, players can claim the final reward; in this case, the Aquarius Flight Pack. This is a cosmetic replacement for the standard flight pack in the game. It features some great design work, and there are three separate sets of markings for the player to choose from when painting it.
There have been a few cosmetic upgrades to the standard flight pack given out as expedition rewards (and for other reasons) over the years. However, the new Aquarius Flight Pack is probably the best-looking version to date. It also matches well with the Deep-Sea Armor cosmetics, which are also given as rewards during the Aquarius Expedition.
2 Exo-Skiff
Deep Sea Fishing Platform
- Can be problematic on high seas.
- Does not move once summoned.
Some fish in No Man’s Sky can only be caught in deep water, out in the ocean. During the Aquarius Expedition, the player will be tasked with catching some especially large fish, and they only swim in deep water. They cannot be caught from the shore, or in the shallows. This means the player needs a platform of some sort to fish from when out in the middle of the ocean.
The Exo-Skiff is the solution to this problem. It can be installed in the player’s exosuit, and once it has been constructed, it can be summoned at will. It will spawn on top of the water, and the player simply has to use their flight pack to get up to it. The Exo-Skiff also comes with refrigerated storage compartments to store any fish that are caught. All that the player has to do is catch and release three fish to complete the phase 2 milestone to unlock the Exo-Skiff.
1 Lost Anglers Rig
The Best Fishing Rod In The Game
- A good upgrade over the basic rig.
- Awarded for completing phase 4.
At the start of the No Man’s Sky Aquarius Expedition, shortly after the player has fixed their ship, they are awarded the blueprints to craft a basic fishing rig. This is a capable piece of equipment and will see the player through most of the expedition.
No Man's Sky: Mistakes To Avoid When Building A Base
No Man's Sky offers a pretty intuitive and entertaining base-building mechanic but it's easy to make mistakes when crafting your own.
However, phase 5 of the expedition requires the player to catch legendary fish, and this means a better fishing rig is needed. Luckily, the reward for completing phase 4 is the blueprint for the Lost Angler’s Rig. This is a significant upgrade over the basic rig, and will help the player through the last phase of the expedition.
