Summary

  • Indieszero is developing Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition for the Nintendo Switch.
  • The Tokyo-based studio has developed titles for classic Nintendo systems like the Super NES, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and Wii U
  • The upcoming game will feature 150 challenges across 13 classic NES titles.

A dataminer has uncovered that the developer of the upcoming Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is indieszero, a small studio that has worked with the Big N in the past. The latest Nintendo Direct livestream was filled with plenty of fun retro announcements, from the long-awaited Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics to the Nintendo Switch Online’s 'Mature Collection' of M-rated N64 titles like Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Perfect Dark.

The June 2024 Nintendo Direct featured yet another blast from the past in the form of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, a collection of 150 special challenges across 13 classic NES titles like the original Super Mario Bros. And The Legend of Zelda. Inspired by the Nintendo World Championships event of 1990, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition allows players to test their retro gaming skills with speedrunning challenges, compete against other players to see who can earn a higher score in Donkey Kong or Ice Climbers, and attempt ultra-difficult Legend Challenges.

Thanks to a dataminer by the handle of Yakumono, fans now know who is developing Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition ahead of its launch on July 18. In a recent Twitter post, Yakumono revealed that they uncovered the name of the developer within the files for the game’s Nintendo eShop pre-load, and that it is none other than the Tokyo-based indieszero. The dataminer also claims that Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition utilizes the same emulation software as Switch Online and the NES Classic Edition mini console.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Is Being Developed By Indieszero

Indieszero’s history stretches way back to the mid-90s, when the studio developed titles for classic Nintendo systems like the Super NES, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and Wii U. Some of its more recent Nintendo games include educational titles like Dr Kawashima's Brain Training for Nintendo Switch and Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain, as well as the NES Remix games.

Given its experience recreating older Nintendo games on current hardware, indieszero is a fitting studio to work on Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. It seems like Nintendo has been keeping many outside developers for its new titles under wraps, with Princess Peach: Showtime studio Good-Feel not being revealed until the day before the game’s launch. Likewise, Nintendo declined to reveal that last November’s Super Mario RPG remake was being developed by ArtePiazza until players uncovered the truth a few days before release.
