Nintendo has officially announced the release of Mario Paint on the Nintendo Switch Online service. This classic retro Mario title has been added to the Super Nintendo channel, and for those who don't already own a Nintendo Switch 2, it might require a peripheral to play. Nintendo Switch Online is a paid service which includes access to several retro Nintendo games for free, and the Super Nintendo channel is currently included with the basic digital subscription.
This marks the first Super Nintendo game added to Nintendo Switch Online since March 2025, and the first time a notable Mario title from the 16-bit era has been added to the service in years. As of late, the company has clearly been more focused on re-releasing popular Nintendo 64 and GameCube titles, so it's nice to see a cult classic first-party Mario title coming to the digital platform after several years of waiting.
Nintendo Switch Online July 2025 Update Adds Classic GameCube Game
The latest update to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service adds a classic GameCube multiplayer game to the mix.
After decades of being stuck on the Super Nintendo, the popular title Mario Paint is available on Nintendo Switch Online. This classic retro game required a mouse peripheral to play, which is undoubtedly one of the main reasons the company neglected to bring it back for so long. Thankfully, the Nintendo Switch 2 controller doubles as a mouse, allowing early adopters of the new console to play the game without needing an additional peripheral. That said, it's important to note that this game is also available to owners of the original Nintendo Switch, which is compatible with some brands of USB mouse.
Mario Paint Added to Nintendo Switch Online, New Trailer Reveals Details
In the reveal trailer for Mario Paint on Nintendo Switch Online, information is included to help gamers use the new mouse function on the Nintendo Switch 2. Although it's called Mario Paint, long-time fans of the game will recall that it also has a music composition feature which allows players to create music with various sounds from Nintendo's library. Not only will this feature return, but players will now be able to save musical creations by using suspend points. Better yet, the original music composed for this game can now be enjoyed on the Nintendo Music app.
While it might not be the most popular game in the franchise, Mario Paint has become legendary for inspiring both musical and digital artists for decades after its release. One of the more recent examples of this inspiration came in the form of a Mario Paint remake of the Succession theme from the popular HBO television show, but gamers have been using this title to re-create popular musical themes since it was first released in 1992. Now that the game is more accessible, hopefully gamers will find it easier than ever to create fun music and art with Mario Paint on Nintendo Switch Online.
