Nintendo has announced that it will discontinue Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers by the end of January. The company recently discontinued My Nintendo Gold Points, which disappointed thousands of Nintendo Switch owners worldwide.
The Japanese company shelved My Nintendo Gold Points in March 2025, marking the end of an era for Switch fans. Each of these Gold Points could be redeemed as a $0.01 USD discount, functioning like a cashback system for loyal fans. A similar scenario is now unfolding for another of the Nintendo Switch's consumer-friendly features, which is likely to let down even more fans.
Nintendo Issues Important Reminder to Players
With time running out, Nintendo issues an important reminder for those that game on the Switch.
Starting on January 30, 2026, Switch owners will no longer be able to purchase Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers. Any active vouchers, including those bought before the discontinuation, will remain usable as long as they haven't expired. For those unfamiliar, Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are a perk of the console's online subscription. Sold for $100, each voucher could be redeemed for two first-party Nintendo games from a select roster, offering savings of up to $20. Unfortunately, this option will soon be discontinued as the company prepares to phase out Game Vouchers.
Nintendo Will Continue Adding New Titles to the Game Voucher Catalog
Nintendo already confirmed that Game Vouchers won't be compatible with the Switch 2 titles. And now that it's discontinuing the feature for previous-gen consoles, it wants fans to know that support won't be ending immediately. According to the company's official announcement, the catalog of Game Voucher-eligible games will continue to expand through 2026, giving fans a chance to make the most of their vouchers until the very end.
It's worth noting that each Nintendo Switch Game Voucher has a 12-month expiration period. Nintendo will continue supporting the program until all active vouchers have either been used or expired. Those with an active voucher and a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will be able to redeem their codes until January 2027, when the service is discontinued for good.
Nintendo has not announced any replacement plans for these vouchers. Unsurprisingly, the community hasn't responded well to the news of their discontinuation, with many expressing frustration online. Critics argue that Nintendo is already strict when it comes to discounts and rarely offers sales on its exclusive titles.
