With just nine days to go until the Nintendo Switch 2 hits store shelves, a fan shared a short unboxing video of a console unit that was obtained ahead of the intended June 5 release. The Switch 2 that was prematurely sold was discovered to be locked behind a system update that Nintendo will not release until June 5, rendering the console useless until then.
The leaked console was revealed over a week before the Switch 2 will go on sale globally. As the successor to the original Switch, the Switch 2 includes features like a bigger screen, improved Joy-Con 2 controllers, and new apps like GameChat that can be utilized to host and join video and audio calls with friends via the Nintendo Switch Online ecosystem. In the days leading up to the Switch 2's launch, major retailers across the US began receiving their initial shipments of Switch 2 consoles. Some retail employees have since shared images of their store's console units locked behind cages that will not be opened until June 5.
Nintendo Shows Off New N64 Switch Online Features
Nintendo unveils the upcoming features for the Nintendo 64 on the Nintendo Switch Online, which includes a change that gamers have wanted for years.
Despite the best efforts of Nintendo and its retail partners, a Switch 2 unit has already been discovered in the wild. A YouTube user named a2dubai posted a short video that showed what the inside of the Switch 2's main box looks like. While the console was obtained nine days before launch, the circumstances behind its acquisition were unclear. Though a2dubai's video was subsequently taken off YouTube, Twitter user Stealth40k re-posted it. After opening the packaging from the bottom, the Switch 2 tablet and Joy-Con 2 controllers are the first things that users will see. While the video ended before a2dbai showed off more, they subsequently commented that the Switch 2 is missing some of its core functions out of the box. A day-one update will be required to ensure the Switch 2 works as intended, so the console is essentially useless until June 5.
A Nintendo Switch 2 Console Was Released Before June 5
The video came out as Nintendo and retailers like Yahoo Shopping of Japan posted consumer alerts that warned customers to avoid scalper listings of the Switch 2. With Nintendo pledging to have several million Switch 2 units ready to go over the coming months, only time will tell how many consoles will reach consumers' hands in early June.
The Switch 2 will have 24 titles in its launch lineup, including Mario Kart World and Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. Between that and support for the majority of games released on the original Switch, what fans will play first on the Switch 2 remains to be seen.
