2025 has barely started, and the gaming industry already had what is likely to be the most significant reveal this year with the long-awaited announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2. While not very many specifics have been revealed about it so far, the Nintendo Switch 2 looks like its predecessor's big brother in a lot of ways, with updated hardware and a sleek look to boot. Fortunately, Nintendo plans to reveal more about the highly anticipated console in a Nintendo Direct scheduled for later this year — but it shouldn't come alone.
There are plenty of games that would work well alongside the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, but one title is more than likely more anticipated than any other potential Switch 2 game, and almost any game currently available or on the way for that matter. This particular game has had a long history of leaving its fans hanging in the balance, wondering whether it will ever see the light of day, and its history with Nintendo makes a strong case for it to finally show more of its face when the Switch 2 finally launches. That game is none other than Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Should Double Down on One Type of Boss Battle
The original Hollow Knight already had an impressively diverse roster of bosses, but a particular group of them deserves to be expanded in Silksong.
The Switch 2 Reveal Should Lead to Another Hollow Knight: Silksong Reveal
It Has Now Been Nearly Six Years Since Silksong Was Announced
Anyone with an ear even remotely close to the ground in the gaming industry, by now, knows that Hollow Knight: Silksong is by far one of the most anticipated games currently in release-date limbo, with it even putting up a decent fight against Grand Theft Auto 6. At this point, Hollow Knight: Silksong has become the source of internet memes, and occasional claims that the game doesn't even exist. This is largely because it has been nearly six years now since Silksong was announced, almost putting it in league with the likes of Cyberpunk 2077, which saw nearly nine years pass from its announcement to its release.
Fortunately, Team Cherry has done its best to keep fans encouraged, confirming that Hollow Knight: Silksong does indeed exist and is still in development. In fact, Matthew Griffin, head of marketing and publishing at Team Cherry, reassured fans on January 18 that the game is "real, progressing, and will release" but didn't provide any further details. The fact that Griffin chose not to go into more detail about Silksong's developmental progress was bothersome, to say the least. However, another recent update, though rather cryptic, seems to have been given by William Pellen, a member of Team Cherry, on his X account.
Silksong's History With Nintendo Could Lead to a Switch 2 Partnership
For some reason, Pellen recently changed his profile pic on X to an image of a slice of chocolate cake, which might have meant nothing if not for eager fans. After reverse-searching the image, fans discovered that it served as the featured image for a recipe that was published on April 2, which just so happens to also be the same day as a Nintendo Direct scheduled for 2025. Since the Nintendo Switch 2 has been confirmed to be featured in the upcoming Direct, it might make sense then if Hollow Knight: Silksong were to be revealed alongside it. The evidence is there, but it is even more curious that Pellen posted on his X account on January 15, "Something big is coming. Keep your eyes closed tomorrow," and the Switch 2 was announced the next day.
Anyone with an ear even remotely close to the ground in the gaming industry, by now, knows that Hollow Knight: Silksong is by far one of the most anticipated games currently in release-date limbo, with it even putting up a decent fight against Grand Theft Auto 6.
If Silksong were revealed alongside the expected Switch 2 feature in the next Nintendo Direct, it would make perfect sense, considering the game's history with Nintendo. During E3 2019, Nintendo featured Hollow Knight: Silksong in their Treehouse: Live presentation, showcasing around 20 minutes of gameplay. While Silksong wasn't then included in Nintendo's main E3 2019 Direct presentation, the fact that Nintendo partnered with Team Cherry in revealing more of Silksong's environments, mechanics, and combat system suggests a Switch 2 partnership could be on the horizon for the game.
In the end, the stars seem to be aligning for Hollow Knight: Silksong to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2. Given its history with Nintendo, a fan base eager for updates, and a cryptic tease from Team Cherry that feels too pointed to ignore, the possibility of Silksong being released this year feels closer than ever. While nothing is confirmed, the stage is clearly set for the Switch 2 to shine even brighter with one of gaming's most anticipated titles in tow. If the upcoming Nintendo Direct makes these dreams come true, 2025 could be remembered as a landmark year for gaming, especially in light of what the year already has in store.
