A proper Nintendo Direct may still happen before August 2024 ends, according to a reliable insider. The past few months have seen a wave of big video game reveals thanks to Summer Games Fest and Gamescom 2024, as well as the June 2024 Nintendo Direct livestream that provided looks at The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and more.

Nintendo would later announce another Nintendo Direct event for August 19, but it ultimately wasn’t centered around any upcoming video games. Instead, this latest livestream showcased the Nintendo Museum, set to open in Kyoto in October and featuring exhibits detailing the company's rich gaming history. While this is exciting news for any gaming enthusiast, many were hoping for a more traditional, game-centric Nintendo Direct before the end of summer.

Gamescom 2024 Ditching Nintendo Award

Gamescom announces its annual award nominees for the year, but the Nintendo category is notably absent from the list.

There may yet be hope for a true Nintendo Direct livestream in August, as hinted by insider PH Brazil on Famiboards (via Comicbook). The user previously predicted a new Nintendo Direct, and many thought the Nintendo Museum presentation was what they were discussing. However, PH Brazil recently clarified that there is more planned for the rest of the month. While some of the other Famiboards users are skeptical due to there only being one week left in August, others think Nintendo could use a new Nintendo Direct livestream to help promote Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, set to launch on August 29.

August 2024 Could Have A Second Nintendo Direct

Traditionally, Nintendo holds a Direct in either August or September to highlight the upcoming fall releases for the given year, and the next few months have some pretty exciting releases in store for Nintendo Switch fans. The previously mentioned Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is set to launch on September 26, while Super Mario Party Jamboree and Mario & Luigi: Brothership will give gamers more of Mario and company in October and November, respectively. Donkey Kong Country Returns HD will then kick things off for 2025, which will also reportedly see the release of highly-anticipated sequels Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

A new Nintendo Direct would be the perfect place to show off more of these upcoming titles, as well as any new indie games being launched on the Switch. Another possibility is the still-unnamed Switch 2 console, which will reportedly be revealed at some point between now and March 2025. Of course, if there is going to be another Nintendo Direct before the end of August, Nintendo will have to announce it soon, given that the month is almost up.
