Yingzhao is the first real boss in Nine Sols, and players must defeat him if they hope to reach Kuafu and claim his Sol Seal. While that is not an extremely difficult undertaking, fans will need a solid understanding of Yingzhao's attacks before they can bring him down. This guide is here to provide that understanding, and it will help players beat General Yingzhao in Nine Sols.
While this guide will detail how to address each of Yingzhao's attacks, players should not expect to execute every maneuver perfectly during their first handful of engagements. Indeed, it can take a while to internalize the correct timing, and Metroidvania fans should be prepared to fail the fight many times before coming out victorious.

Nine Sols: General Yingzhao Boss Fight
Before players jump into battle with Yingzhao, they may want to take a moment to equip either the Recovery Jade, which increases the recovery rate of Internal Damage, or the Quick Dose Jade, which shortens the time that it takes to use Yi's Pipe. Indeed, both of those stones can be quite helpful during the fight, and they can be purchased from Chiyou, a vendor near the Root Node on the left side of Power Reservoir (Central).
Phase One
Yingzhao has two attacks during the first phase of the fight. Here are details on those attacks and recommendations on how to address them:
- Stationary Dual Strike: This attack sees Yingzhao perform two strikes from a stationary position, the first strike traveling downward and the second traveling upward. Indie video game fans are advised to use parries against both of those swings and then perform a series of sword strikes, or a Qi Blast, when both have been deflected.
Players can sneak two sword hits in between this attack's first and second strike.
- Running Sweeps: This attack sees Yingzhao perform two running sweeps followed by a stab attack, and players are once again advised to address the strikes with parries. Notably, Soulslike fans may find that stepping toward Yingzhao as he executes each strike makes it easier to perfect parry, and a series of sword attacks, or a Qi Blast, can be deployed at the end of the sequence.
Players can use dodges to stay close to Yingzhao as he runs back and forth, making it possible to deal damage to the boss while he is repositioning.
Phase Two
Yingzhao continues to use his stationary dual strikes and running sweeps in phase two, though he adds crimson strikes to the end of those sequences. Here are details on those crimson strikes, and fans of hard video games should use Qi Blasts or sword combos immediately after the attacks have been performed:
- Crimson Lunge: Yingzhao picks up a crimson lunge in phase two, and he will execute it as a standalone attack or immediately following the stationary dual strike from phase one. While it is ideal that players perform a Tai-Chick Kick on the boss as soon as he begins charging this attack, it is perfectly fine to simply avoid it with a dodge.
- Crimson Slam: Yingzhao will begin performing a crimson slam immediately after the stab attack in the running sweeps sequence. Players are advised to avoid that followup attack with a dodge, and they should wait for Yingzhao to begin traveling downward before executing that maneuver.
After defeating Yingzhao, and collecting the Herb Catalyst, players should travel to the right to confront Kuafu. This confrontation will ultimately give fans of games with unique art styles access to a terminal that provides the first Sol Seal.
