Internal Damage is a mechanic in Nine Sols that plays a critical role in the game's combat system. While players will see many references to this mechanic as they accumulate Jades and learn skills, they may be unclear about exactly how it works. Fortunately, Nine Sols' Internal Damage mechanic is not extremely complex, and this guide will give fans a solid understanding of its functionality.

Internal Damage can be applied to Yi and his enemies, and this guide covers both of those applications.

Nine Sols: How Does Internal Damage Work

To start with the basics, Internal Damage is a type of damage that is automatically recovered if it is not converted into direct damage before the recovery occurs. Yi's Internal Damage is converted into direct damage if he takes actual damage before the recovery, while an enemy's Internal Damage is converted into direct damage with the Qi Blast ability. More details on this difference can be found in the following sections.

Yi Internal Damage

Yi takes Internal Damage any time that he deflects an attack with an imprecise parry, which is a parry that is done slightly too early. Yi's Internal Damage is represented as a red section on his health bar, and that section grows as Nine Sols players perform consecutive imprecise parries. That red section will refill if Yi stops taking Internal Damage for a short time, and it is removed if he takes actual damage before the refill has occurred.

Players can increase the rate at which Yi's Internal Damage is restored by equipping the Recovery Jade in Nine Sols.

Enemy Internal Damage

Yi can inflict Internal Damage upon an enemy by attaching a Talisman to them, hitting them with a Tai-Chi Kick when they glow green, successfully executing an Unbound Counter, and performing several other actions. An enemy's Internal Damage is represented as a purple section on their health bar, and, like Yi's, it refills if the enemy is left undamaged for some time.

There is a key difference between Yi's Internal Damage and an enemy's Internal Damage, though. Specifically, while Yi loses the chance to recover Internal Damage if he is hit with actual damage before the recovery occurs, that is not the case for enemies in Nine Sols. Indeed, players will find that the purple section of an enemy's health bar remains even if they strike the foe repeatedly with their blade.

To remove the purple section of an enemy health bar, and convert Internal Damage into direct damage, players need to attach a Talisman to the foe and detonate it. That detonation is initially called a Qi Blast, and Metroidvania fans will find that an enemy loses all of its purple health as soon as one is executed.
