A new round of leaks has surfaced about the upcoming PlayStation 6 and next-gen Xbox consoles, with insiders claiming that Microsoft may once again have a slight edge in raw power. Despite this potential advantage, the situation appears more nuanced, with both next-gen PlayStation and Xbox systems supposedly bringing different strengths to the table.

With the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 having completed nearly half a decade on the market, speculation surrounding the tenth generation of console hardware has ramped up over the past year. The next-gen Xbox console, reportedly codenamed "Magnus," has been touted as a massive leap in performance by Microsoft. Meanwhile, Sony has kept things close to the vest aside from the announcement of Project Amethyst in late 2024, where the PlayStation parent company is teaming up with AMD to develop improved machine learning tech and neural networks for future gaming-centric hardware.

PS6 and Next-Gen Xbox May Feature a Similar Performance Delta to the PS5 and Xbox Series X

The pace of leaks and rumors surrounding the PS6 and next Xbox has picked up in recent months, and there's yet another one to discuss. Over on NeoGAF, reputable industry insider KeplerL2 claimed that the PS6 will offer performance equivalent to the AMD RX 9070 XT graphics card, whereas the next-gen Xbox's performance could land close to the NVIDIA RTX 5080. Though one-to-one spec comparisons against Nvidia and AMD architectures are near-impossible, real-world benchmarks place the next Xbox at about 20 percent more performant than the PS6 in terms of raw power, mirroring the PS5 vs Xbox Series X delta.

However, KeplerL2 added that the PS6 may offer advanced GPU features not present in the next-gen Xbox, including Dense Geometry Format (for Unreal Engine 5's Nanite rendering), Streaming Wave Coalescer, Workgroup Self-Launch, and enhanced ray tracing. These features stem from AMD's upcoming RDNA 5 architecture, purportedly dubbed "UDNA," which is anticipated to bring the most significant architectural shift since 2012's GCN (Graphics Core Next), which underpinned the GPUs of the PS4 and Xbox One. It wouldn't be too unreasonable to assume that the inclusion of the aforementioned features in the PS6 is a direct result of Project Amethyst.

Signs suggest Xbox may be phasing out physical game discs for good.

Though the next-gen Xbox's chipset might not support some of those advanced graphical features, its alleged raw advantage in processing power would still make the console a formidable rival to the PS6. However, separate reports have claimed that the next Xbox may make the jump to Windows in place of a specialized operating system, essentially making the system a full-blown pre-built PC that can access multiple digital storefronts. Sony's approach to the PS6 looks to be more traditional in this regard, and there's mounting evidence that the gaming giant will offer a new-gen handheld with PS5-level power alongside the console.
