Summary

  • The next Super Smash Bros. Game will likely feature fresh faces from third parties.
  • Yakuza games coming to Nintendo consoles open the door for Kiryu to be featured on the roster.
  • Multiple Sega characters are already on the Smash roster, so it would make sense for Kiryu to join them.

Nintendo has not officially announced a new Super Smash Bros. Game, but such a release is inevitable, and when it does come out, it should have Kazuma Kiryu of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise as part of its roster of playable characters. Super Smash Bros. Started as a love letter to Nintendo history, but it eventually expanded to embrace gaming in general. Recent Super Smash Bros. Titles have added characters and stages from third parties and even direct competitors.

Presumably, the next Super Smash Bros. Game will do the same. The jury is still out on whether the next Super Smash Bros. Game will feature all the characters from Ultimate or start fresh, but it's a virtual guarantee that the game will feature some fresh faces. Every Super Smash Bros. Game has had new playable characters for fans to try, and it's highly unlikely that the next Super Smash Bros. Game will be an exception to the rule.

Super Smash Bros. Bosses Ranked

Players have seen a variety of boss encounters in the Super Smash Bros. Games. Here's how they rank in terms of how memorable they were.

When the Nintendo Switch 2 is finally unveiled, the announcement of the next Super Smash Bros. Game won't be far behind. New characters will likely be revealed for the roster on a regular basis leading up to the game's eventual launch, but it's anyone's guess as to who will be featured. As far as third-party guest characters go, I think one must-have is Kazuma Kiryu of Yakuza fame. Kiryu's various fighting stances could inspire a unique Super Smash Bros. Moveset, plus Sega seems interested in expanding its long-running franchise to Nintendo consoles. Adding Kiryu to the Super Smash Bros. Roster would be a great way to introduce him to fans and potentially get them interested in his games.

Kiryu Would Be Perfect for Super Smash Bros.

Yakuza Kiwami was ported to the Switch late last year, but there are plenty of other Yakuza games ripe for ports. The Switch 2 is going to be more powerful than the original Switch, potentially opening the door for the entire Yakuza series to come to the console over time. Sega has not announced any games for the Switch 2 yet, but Yakuza ports do seem like an obvious choice.

While Nintendo and Sega used to be bitter rivals, the two companies have proven to be great partners for the past couple of decades. In fact, Sega has already allowed some of its characters to be featured in Super Smash Bros. Joker was DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, while Sonic the Hedgehog has been featured in every game since Brawl on the Wii. While the Yakuza franchise's M rating and Kiryu's smoking habits may have once thrown a wrench in the plans, Super Smash Bros. Has long featured characters from M-rated games, and so that shouldn't be a roadblock. In any case, Kiryu has solidified himself as one of gaming's most iconic characters, and he truly seems like a perfect fit for Super Smash Bros.
