Ubisoft has regularly been releasing new Assassin's Creed games since the first one launched in 2007, with the franchise showing no signs of slowing down. The last major Assassin's Creed release was Assassin's Creed Valhalla in 2020, with reports indicating that the next game in the series will likely launch later this year. However, new information suggests that the next Assassin's Creed game, codenamed Assassin's Creed Rift, may actually come in early 2023 instead.

This is according to Colin Moriarty of the Sacred Symbols podcast, known for his insider information and breaking news on PlayStation games. While Moriarty is primarily known for his PlayStation scoops, his sources tell him that the next Assassin's Creed game may actually launch in the first two months of 2023 instead of late 2022 as others have reported. Ubisoft made no mention of the rumored Assassin's Creed Rift during its latest investors call, so there may be something to this.

Then again, it's also possible the Ubisoft conference call made no mention of Assassin's Creed Rift because the game has not been officially announced. At the time of this writing, all Assassin's Creed fans know is coming for sure is the live-service Assassin's Creed Infinity, though that's not expected to launch for quite some time.

As for Assassin's Creed Rift, rumors suggest that it may actually return the franchise back to its roots. The latest Assassin's Creed installments have shifted away from the series' original stealth gameplay to be massive, open world action-adventure RPGs instead. If the reports about Assassin's Creed Rift are to be believed, the game will be much smaller in scale than games like Odyssey and Valhalla, which could make it more in-line with older games in the series.

There's not a lot of other information about Assassin's Creed Rift, except that it will reportedly star Basim from Assassin's Creed Valhalla as the main character and take place in Baghdad. Rumor has it that the game started life as another Assassin's Creed Valhalla expansion before Ubisoft made the decision to release it as a standalone title instead, though fans should take all of this with a grain of salt until an official announcement comes.

There's a lot of Ubisoft games on deck for 2022 and 2023 even without a new Assassin's Creed title, but the franchise's release schedule certainly suggests that fans can likely expect the next game to be released this year. But fans should keep in mind that it could very well slip to early 2023 as Moriarty's sources have claimed.

Assassin's Creed Rift is rumored to be in development.
