Developer Image & Form has confirmed over Twitter that a new SteamWorld game is in the works, though the time frame for the game's release is still pretty much up in the air.
The news broke when Image & Form set about looking for two additional 2D artists to add to the SteamWorld team for development. The popular series follows a race of steam-powered robots and spans a number of different genres from tower-defense to RPG.
Although Image & Form informally announced the new game via Twitter, it also followed up in another tweet to clarify that there's currently no planned release date for the game, let alone a date set to "officially" announce its development. So, unfortunately, there's not much to know about the new title beyond its planned existence at this point. The series began in 2010 with SteamWorld Tower Defense on Nintendo DSi, but the franchise gained more fame (and acclaim) with SteamWorld Dig on 3DS in 2013.
The SteamWorld series' previous track record of releasing for a Nintendo console does beg the question of what platform this new title will release for upon its eventual launch. There's still no word on whether the new SteamWorld will still be available for a Nintendo console, let alone which one it'll be.
However, all previous SteamWorld games (Dig, Dig 2, Heist, and Quest) are all coming to Google Stadia at no additional cost to Pro subscribers, so perhaps the series is in the process of making a permanent move from Nintendo to Google.
The untitled SteamWorld game is currently in development.
