Summary

  • What If...? Game is exclusive to Apple Vision Pro headsets, limiting access for fans who can't afford the $3,499.00 price tag.
  • The game is an immersive story where players interact with Marvel characters, using Doctor Strange spells.
  • Two seasons of the What If...? Series have been mostly positively received.

The upcoming What If...? Video game is releasing exclusively on Apple Vision Pro headsets, meaning it won't be playable for the vast majority of fans. What If is an animated Disney+ series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It explores different Marvel universes, showing how things may have played out differently, like if Peggy Carter was the first Avenger instead of Steve Rogers or if the MCU had to deal with a zombie outbreak. Two seasons of What If have been released so far, and there is a third season in development as well.

Both seasons of the What If TV series received mostly positive reviews, though fan reactions to the show have been mixed. There are those who enjoy seeing their favorite MCU characters in imaginative new scenarios, but others feel as though the concept doesn't go far enough. Regardless, What If enthusiasts will soon have the chance to play a virtual reality game based on the show, though it will only be available to a very niche audience.

Rumor: Fan Favorite Spider-Man Villain Returning In Marvel's What If...? Season 3

A Spider-Man villain many fans thought was gone forever may return in Marvel Studios' What If...? Season 3, but there are several possibilities.

The What If virtual reality game is an "immersive story" that sees players step into the Multiverse and interact with various Marvel characters. Players team with The Watcher and have to stop Variants from gathering the Infinity Stones. The brief What If game trailer showed the player utilizing Doctor Strange spells to interact with their environment, possible thanks to the Apple Vision Pro's mixed reality features. Unfortunately, the What If game being exclusive to Apple Vision Pro headsets means that the game is a non-factor for many Marvel fans. Apple Vision Pro headsets cost a staggering $3,499.00 minimum, which has kept even some of the most diehard Apple enthusiasts from adopting the device.

Apple Vision Pro headset sales have been hugely disappointing, with Apple drastically cutting its expected sales of the headset. It seems unlikely that the What If game will be the exclusive project that will convince more people to adopt a Vision Pro headset, but for those that already have the device, they can check out the game when it launches on May 30.

Will the Marvel What If Game Come to Other Headsets?

It's unclear at this time if the What If game will ever come to cheaper virtual reality headsets. The Meta Quest VR line of headsets seem to be the most popular, and there is also the PS5's PlayStation VR2 headset to consider as well. Unfortunately, no plans to bring the What If...? Game to other platforms has been announced at this time, so anyone interested in playing it will need to shell out the $3,499.00 for an Apple Vision Pro.
