This game was announced at Tokyo Game Show 2024, the annual Japanese gaming event. A number of Western publishers like Xbox, Blizzard, and Bethesda were at the event, specifically to promote various games that were "worth tuning in for" based on insider remarks. This included an indie RPG inspired by Square Enix's Chrono Trigger.

1995's Chrono Trigger is one of the most important RPGs of the genre. Made by legendary creators such as Akira Toriyama, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, Yasunori Mitsuda, and Nobuo Uematsu, the game remains a classic to this day. Chrono Trigger's gameplay and time-traveling storyline would go on to influence the likes of various other games, with Threads of Time the latest RPG that is directly inspired by Square Enix's time-traveling classic.

Threads of Time is being developed by Riyo Games and was one of the games revealed during Xbox's Tokyo Game Show presentation. The RPG features a 2.5D pixel art look that makes it have a modern and retro graphical style, powered by Unreal Engine 5. The game has a turn-based combat system that revolves around manipulating time in order to unleash powerful teamwork-based combos. Threads of Time will be released on both Xbox and PC platforms, the latter via Steam.

Threads of Time Is Inspired by Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger

Like Chrono Trigger, Threads of Time sees the player traveling through various time periods. In this time-travel-based RPG, the player will visit all sorts of locales, from the prehistoric era with dinosaurs to a future teeming with robots and mechanical life, and many more settings. Characters from different epochs will be playable in this adventure, such as the Time Knight, Rye; the transforming kitsune ninja from the future, Rin; and the dinosaur veterinarian, Bo.

Xbox had a surprising variety of titles showcased at the event, such as shadow dropping the entirety of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters collection on Xbox. This gives gamers access to six classic Final Fantasy games on the platform. Other RPGs like Metaphor: ReFantazio and Bleach: Rebirth of Souls were also given focus during the event.
