Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will bring its classic story and gameplay to a new generation of players this fall, but it may not be the only strategy RPG that Square Enix fans will see over the next few years. There has been no confirmed follow-up to Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles just yet, but director Kazutoyo Maehiro has hinted that more might be coming before too long.

Proving that the ongoing rumors were true, the remastered version of 1997's Final Fantasy Tactics was revealed at the State of Play presentation on June 4. Planned for release on September 30 across multiple platforms, the remastered game will sport more than just a visual upgrade, including features like fully voiced dialogue, player control over battle speed, and adjustments to the original narrative.

Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster Coming With 2 Versions

Square Enix confirms a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster is coming soon, with two distinct versions available as a part of the same game.

While longtime fans have shown excitement over the revival of the classic PlayStation 1-era game, Maehiro has suggested that it might not be the last of its kind, given the proper circumstances. In a recent interview with Inverse, Maehiro was asked about the potential for The Ivalice Chronicles to strike a chord with hew players given the lengthy gap between Tactics games in the Final Fantasy franchise. The first-time Final Fantasy game director, who has been working on the series since the release of the original Final Fantasy Tactics, responded by stating that this game is being made specifically for players who never got a shot at the original and touting some of the features already confirmed for The Ivalice Chronicles. However, his final comment on the matter is possibly the most interesting, as he stated that if it is successful, it would "surely pave the way for the release of new Tactics titles that follow The Ivalice Chronicles."

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles May Be Just The Beginning

This isn't the first time that Square Enix has provided life support for its now 28-year-old strategy RPG. The game was re-released in the Sony Greatest Hits collection four years after its original launch. Additionally, an enhanced PlayStation Portable version, titled Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, was released in 2007, although Maehiro noted that the extra War of the Lions content will not be present in The Ivalice Chronicles.

While fans will want to wait to gauge The Ivalice Chronicles' commercial success before expecting a sequel, there is another rumored Final Fantasy game that still hasn't shown itself after four years. The original leaks leading up to the reveal of the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster came to players in 2021 alongside leaks suggesting a remaster of Final Fantasy 9, though Square Enix has yet to announce the return of Zidane Tribal and his crew.
