Indie developer TRAGsoft has announced a new Coromon game, but instead of being a sequel, it's a spinoff called Coromon: Rogue Planet. The new game will keep the same monster-capturing structure inspired by Pokemon, but it will shift its gameplay toward a roguelite style with grid-based exploration.

Coromon was released in 2022 for PC and Nintendo Switch. It's a turn-based monster-taming game that adds a few twists to the genre, such as Coromons with different colors based on their potential, stat allocation at each level up, and a very transparent difficulty system. When the game launched on the Switch, players quickly compared Coromon to the older Pokemon games with its pixel art visuals and a top-down camera perspective. Being available on PC, Coromon reached a different audience from Pokemon's.

Now, developer TRAGsoft has announced a new game set in the Coromon universe, but unlike what fans might have expected, it's not a sequel but a spinoff. The newly announced game is called Coromon: Rogue Planet, and although it shares similarities with its predecessor, it's structurally different. Coromon: Rogue Planet is a roguelite and seems to have an exploration based on a grid system. According to the official description, the game will still feature RPG monster-taming characteristics, and players can encounter up to 130 monsters to train and battle.

New Coromon Game Announced

Coromon: Rogue Planet takes place on the planet Velua and will feature 10 distinct biomes. Each biome has its own challenges, rewards, risks, and a unique ecosystem of Coromons. It will also be possible to meet other Coromon trainers in the biomes, and by helping them, they become selectable characters. There are seven characters in total, and completing their milestones unlocks new bonuses for consecutive runs, a prominent feature in the best roguelite games.

The organization that researches Coromons, Lux Solis, is also present in Coromon: Rogue Planet and it grants players with resources and funding as they progress through the story. The game describes a system where the progress of all players will contribute to advancing a global narrative in Coromon: Rogue Planet. One of the biggest differences between Coromon and older Pokemon games is that the former puts significant effort into its narrative.

Coromon: Rogue Planet was announced for PC via Steam and Epic Game Store, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS, with an estimated release date in 2025. The original Coromon is available on these platforms and is an excellent alternative for those looking to try new monster-taming games outside the Pokemon universe.
